Flu Vaccine Ireland: HSE Eligibility Guide for Winter 2026

HSE South West explains who qualifies for a free flu vaccine in winter 2026 and how eligible people can arrange protection early.

Flu vaccine Ireland guidance is especially important as winter approaches, with the Health Service Executive (HSE) reminding people at higher risk of serious illness to get protected before seasonal infections peak. Vaccination takes about two weeks to become effective, so eligible people are encouraged to arrange an appointment early.

HSE South West is offering free flu vaccines through participating GPs, pharmacies and HSE vaccination clinics. The programme covers several groups, including older adults, children, pregnant women, healthcare workers and people living with certain medical conditions.

Flu vaccine Ireland: who can get a free vaccination?

You may be eligible for a free flu vaccine from your GP, pharmacy or an HSE South West vaccination clinic if you:

  • Are aged 60 or older
  • Are aged between 2 and 17
  • Work in healthcare
  • Are pregnant
  • Live in a nursing home or another long-term care facility
  • Have regular contact with pigs, poultry or waterfowl
  • Have an eligible health condition and are aged six months or older
  • Live with, or care for, someone with certain health conditions

The complete list of qualifying medical conditions is available through the HSE’s flu vaccination information service. People who are uncertain about their eligibility can contact HSELive on 1800 700 700.

Children and residential care residents

Children aged two to 17 can receive the free nasal flu vaccine through participating GPs and pharmacies, as well as some school-based programmes. HSE vaccination teams are also providing vaccines to residents of nursing homes, other residential care settings and people who are housebound.

Why early vaccination matters

Seasonal flu is more than an unpleasant cold. It can cause severe illness, hospital admission and prolonged recovery, particularly among older people and those with underlying conditions. Vaccination helps reduce the risk of serious complications and supports protection across households and care settings.

Healthcare workers, carers and people who have close contact with vulnerable individuals also play an important role in limiting transmission. Daily vaccination clinics are available for healthcare workers in the HSE South West region.

How to arrange a free flu vaccine

  1. Check the HSE eligibility criteria.
  2. Contact a participating GP, pharmacy or HSE vaccination clinic.
  3. Ask HSELive for guidance if you are unsure.
  4. Arrange vaccination early, allowing approximately two weeks for protection to develop.
