Active School Flag: Irish Schools Invited to Run Around the EU

Active School Flag schools across Ireland are being invited to take part in a new three-week challenge that combines movement, learning and European culture. The Department of Education and Youth says the initiative is designed to make daily physical activity accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for primary and special-school communities.

Running from 28 September to 16 October 2026, the Active School Flag ‘Run Around the EU’ Challenge encourages pupils, teachers and school staff to build a ten-minute activity break into each school day. Participants can walk, jog, run or wheel laps, with every lap contributing one kilometre to the class total.

Active School Flag challenge links exercise with learning

Classes will add their combined kilometres and track how many EU capital cities they can virtually reach during the challenge. The format allows children of different abilities to participate while strengthening teamwork and encouraging schools to make movement part of everyday learning.

Minister for Education and Youth Hildegarde Naughton encouraged primary and special schools nationwide to register. She highlighted the initiative’s focus on healthy habits, wellbeing, concentration, inclusion and enjoyment in the classroom.

Minister of State at the Department of Health Jennifer Murnane O’Connor also welcomed the programme, saying that encouraging physical activity from an early age can help children develop habits that support long-term health and wellbeing.

How the school challenge works

  • Schools register through the Active School Flag website.
  • Classes complete a daily ten-minute walking, jogging, running or wheeling break.
  • Each completed lap counts as one kilometre for the class.
  • Combined distances are used to visit EU capital cities virtually.
  • Registered schools receive ready-made resources in English and Irish.

Blue Star Programme supports European education

The challenge is supported by Healthy Ireland and the Blue Star programme. Coordinated by European Movement Ireland and funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Blue Star introduces primary pupils to European cultures and the European Union through creative projects linked to the national curriculum.

EU Member Fact Files have been shared with participating schools, giving teachers additional material to connect geography, citizenship and cultural learning with the physical activity challenge.

Why inclusive activity matters in schools

The Active School Flag approach places participation ahead of competition. By allowing pupils to choose walking, wheeling, jogging or running, the challenge can accommodate different confidence levels, mobility needs and fitness abilities.

Schools interested in joining should visit the Active School Flag website, where they can find registration details and downloadable resources. The initiative offers a practical way for school communities to combine physical education, wellbeing and European awareness during the school day.

Key takeaway

The Active School Flag ‘Run Around the EU’ Challenge gives Irish primary and special schools a simple shared goal: move regularly, learn about Europe and build healthier routines together. Registration and participation resources are available through the Active School Flag programme.
