Dublin Digest: Dundrum Unveils Connected Plan for Buses, Streets and Public Spaces

Dundrum is set for a major programme of coordinated transport and public-realm improvements, with projects designed to make the village safer, greener and easier to navigate. The plan brings together a new bus-only connection, upgraded streetscapes and preparations for a future civic and cultural centre.

Dundrum projects form one connected plan

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council says the works reflect the long-term vision established in the Dundrum Local Area Plan. Rather than delivering every element at the same time, the council will progress the projects in stages, with separate planning and consultation processes for each scheme.

One of the central changes is a new one-way, bus-only road linking Sweetmount Avenue with Main Street. Known as a Bus Gate, the connection is intended to support more reliable bus journeys. A new bus stop is also planned on the Dundrum bypass, while existing bus stops and general car circulation are expected to remain unaffected.

Bus layover areas currently located on Waldemar Terrace will be redistributed to other agreed locations. This move will create space for a substantial public-realm project at an important gateway to Dundrum Village.

New civic space planned at Waldemar Terrace

The proposed public realm east and north of Waldemar Terrace will include landscaping, planting, seating and natural play facilities. The project is intended to rebalance the village centre by providing a more welcoming civic setting for residents, visitors and local businesses.

The scheme is supported by a €4 million investment from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund. It will also help prepare the area for the future Dundrum Civic and Cultural Centre. The published drawings are illustrative and do not represent the final design. Public consultation is expected later in 2026.

Planned benefits for Dundrum

  • Improved bus services and a new bus stop
  • More attractive landscaping and public spaces
  • Better walking and cycling links
  • Safer junctions and updated road layouts
  • More accessible urban design
  • Formalisation of the temporary road arrangement

Community consultation will continue

The council says delivering the projects sequentially should limit disruption and give the community clear opportunities to comment. More detailed designs and project information will be released as each element advances.

For readers following Dublin news and local development, the programme is significant because it links transport improvements with the future of Dundrum as a residential, commercial and community hub.

What happens next?

The initial work will involve relocating bus stops to enable the Waldemar Terrace public-realm investment. Each project will then move through its own design, planning and consultation stages. Residents, traders and other stakeholders will have opportunities to provide feedback before final decisions are made.

Key takeaway: Dundrum’s new connected plan aims to combine better public transport, improved streets and high-quality civic space. The projects will be delivered over time, with public consultation playing an important role in shaping the final results.
