Shared Island Media: €14m Programme Expands Cross-Border Journalism and Production

Ireland’s €14m Shared Island media programme will support cross-border journalism and all-island audio, film and television production.

Ireland’s Shared Island media programme is entering a significant new phase, with €14 million in investment supporting stronger connections between communities, journalists and creative producers across the island. Led by Coimisiún na Meán, the initiative aims to improve understanding of everyday life and major events in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Shared Island Media Programme Targets Cross-Border Reporting

The Department of the Taoiseach has identified civic society and media as a key area for Shared Island investment. Under the programme, Coimisiún na Meán is developing initiatives designed to encourage journalism and media production that reflects experiences on both sides of the border.

A new journalism scheme is planned for 2026. Its purpose is to support increased cross-border reporting, giving audiences more consistent coverage of communities, public services and developments across the island. The scheme is intended to help build a clearer picture of daily life and important events in Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Supporting All-Island Audio, Film and Television

The programme also includes the Shared Island Sound & Vision initiative, which supports cross-border and all-island audio, film and television production. The scheme has already launched and is designed to create opportunities for collaboration between producers and media organisations.

By supporting projects with an all-island focus, the initiative can help broaden the range of stories reaching audiences while strengthening links across Ireland’s creative industries. It also places Coimisiún na Meán at the centre of efforts to develop a more connected media landscape.

Funding Announced Under Shared Island, Shared Stories

On 15 October 2026, almost €4 million in funding was announced under the “Shared Island, Shared Stories” scheme. The announcement represents a major stage in the delivery of the wider Shared Island media agenda and highlights the Government’s continued investment in civic society and communications.

The Department of the Taoiseach is working with Coimisiún na Meán and the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport on the programme. As Ireland’s independent media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán is responsible for leading the development and delivery of the media initiatives.

Why Shared Island Media Matters

Cross-border journalism can provide context that is often missing from regional reporting. It can highlight how communities experience policy, transport, housing, health and cultural issues differently, while also identifying common concerns and shared opportunities.

  • Encouraging reporting that connects audiences across the border
  • Supporting collaboration between journalists and production teams
  • Promoting all-island audio, film and television projects
  • Improving public understanding of communities and events across Ireland

The programme also complements the wider work of public bodies and cultural organisations involved in communications, heritage and community development. Its success will depend on the quality, reach and diversity of the projects supported.

What Happens Next?

The planned 2026 journalism scheme and the newly launched Sound & Vision programme are expected to provide practical opportunities for media organisations and creative professionals. Further details about eligibility, applications and supported projects should be confirmed through the relevant programme partners.

Overall, the Shared Island media investment is intended to strengthen cross-border storytelling and give audiences a richer understanding of life across the island. The clear takeaway is that sustained funding and collaboration can help create a more connected, representative and informed media environment.
