Ireland’s preparations for Sunday’s Nations League meeting with Israel were overshadowed again after Heimir Hallgrímsson’s pre-match press conference was brought to an early conclusion following a tense exchange with Israeli journalists.
The latest incident adds to an already difficult international camp for the Republic of Ireland, with political questions, allegations and intense media scrutiny surrounding the fixture in Serbia.
Ireland Israel press conference cut short
Hallgrímsson was taking questions ahead of Ireland’s second Nations League match against Israel when the atmosphere became increasingly confrontational. The game is officially an Ireland home fixture, but it will be played behind closed doors at the neutral venue of Backa Topola in Serbia.
An Israeli reporter first raised the subject of the reported incident involving Flydubai Flight 1073. A subsequent question then referred to an allegation that Irish players had directed racist abuse at Israeli opponents during the previous meeting.
The Football Association of Ireland immediately rejected that claim. FAI press officer Kieran Crowley described the allegation as “completely untrue” before ending the session and leading Hallgrímsson from the room.
Video from the room showed the reporter continuing to challenge the decision as the Ireland manager and officials departed. The incident was later presented differently by some Israeli media outlets, but the available footage showed the FAI attempting to bring the increasingly heated exchange to a close.
A highly charged Ireland camp
The confrontation is the latest controversy to affect these two Nations League fixtures. The build-up to the previous match in Debrecen was dominated by uncertainty over whether Ireland would proceed, while Hallgrímsson faced difficult questions about his use of the word “genocide”, his coaching work in Qatar and Ireland’s historic fixtures against Nazi Germany in the 1930s.
The Ireland manager acknowledged the unusual pressure surrounding the team and said that simply completing the camp together would represent a significant achievement.
“Surviving this camp, coming out of it together as one would be a massive win for me,” Hallgrímsson said, stressing the unity shown by the squad despite the criticism and distractions.
He also indicated that three points would exceed his expectations, while praising the respect and togetherness within the group. For Ireland, the match therefore carries importance beyond the Nations League table: it is also a test of concentration and collective discipline.
Team news ahead of Ireland v Israel
Ireland will be without captain Dara O’Shea for the match. The defender returned to London for the birth of his child after missing Saturday’s training session, and Hallgrímsson confirmed that he would not feature.
James Abankwah is also unavailable through suspension. Nathan Collins and Séamus Coleman are absent from the camp, leaving Ireland with further leadership changes before the meeting in Backa Topola.

Focus turns to the football
With the press conference finished and the final preparations complete, Hallgrímsson’s priority will be ensuring that the controversy does not affect Ireland’s performance. The manager has already spoken about the importance of protecting the squad’s bond, and the players must now turn that unity into a controlled display on the pitch.
Israel will provide another demanding test in a match played under exceptional circumstances. With no home crowd present and neutral surroundings in Serbia, Ireland will need to create its own energy while maintaining discipline from the opening whistle.
The result could have a major bearing on Ireland’s Nations League campaign, but the immediate challenge is clear: stay focused, avoid further distractions and finish the camp strongly.
