Parents and guardians planning post-primary education should prepare early for the School Applications pilot, which will introduce a central online application process for selected first-year places for the 2027/28 school year. According to gov.ie, applications through applytoschool.ie are due to open on 1 October 2026.
The Department of Education and Youth is testing the system in selected areas to make applications, document submission and offer management more structured for families and participating schools.
School Applications pilot: Where it applies
The pilot covers selected schools in Athenry, Celbridge, Clonakilty, Greystones, Kilbeggan, Kilcoole, Maynooth, Oranmore, Rosscarbery and Tullamore/Killina. It does not include every post-primary school in those locations, so families should check the official participating-school list before applying.
Participating schools include community colleges, voluntary secondary schools and schools with different religious or multi-denominational ethos. Each school continues to operate under its own published admissions policy.
School Applications timeline for 2027/28
The online form is scheduled to open on 1 October 2026, with applications closing on 22 October 2026. Schools are scheduled to issue first-year offers on 12 November 2026. Applicants may receive more than one offer where they apply to multiple participating schools, but the Department advises families to accept only the place they intend to take.
Important preparation steps
- Review each school’s admissions policy and oversubscription criteria.
- Prepare the child’s birth certificate.
- Have up to two recent documents confirming the current address.
- Check that digital files are clear, complete and within the 10MB size limit.
Documents needed for mainstream and special-class applications
All applicants must upload a copy of the child’s birth certificate and proof of address. Families applying for a special class, or for both mainstream and special-class places, must also provide relevant professional reports, evidence describing the child’s level of need and a clear recommendation on the most suitable educational placement.
An NCSE letter confirming that the child is known to the service and has the required diagnosis and recommendation for an autism special class is also required where applicable. Special-class decisions remain the responsibility of individual schools and are based on their published criteria.
Uploading files correctly
The system accepts JPG, JPEG, PDF, PNG, TIFF, TIF and BMP files. Multi-page documents should be combined into one file, while photographs must show the full document clearly and in portrait orientation. Blurred or incomplete files may need to be submitted again.

Offers, oversubscription and waiting lists
When applications exceed available places, schools must follow the fair and clearly stated rules in their admissions policies. If a child is not offered a place because a school is full, they may be placed on that school’s waiting list. Waiting lists are managed by individual schools and are used when places become available.
The Department of Education and Youth does not decide which applicants receive places. Parents should therefore consult the relevant school website for detailed criteria, deadlines for accepting offers and enrolment requirements.
