Irish Rugby Switch Talk Dismissed as Stormers Confirm Jonathan Roche Commitment

Stormers coach John Dobson has dismissed reports linking Jonathan Roche with Ireland and says the young centre has agreed a new contract.

Rumours linking Stormers centre Jonathan Roche with a move to Ireland have been firmly rejected by head coach John Dobson. The latest development adds clarity to a story that briefly raised questions about the future of a young South African talent with Irish family ties.

Stormers reject Jonathan Roche transfer reports

Reports had suggested that Roche was considering a move to one of Ireland’s four provinces when his current Stormers contract expires next summer. However, Dobson has described that claim as “preposterous” and insisted the 23-year-old remains committed to the Cape Town club.

Speaking ahead of the Stormers’ United Rugby Championship meeting with Scarlets, Dobson said there was no indication from Roche that he wanted to pursue a move into Irish rugby. He also revealed that the centre had agreed to a contract extension, with an official announcement expected in November.

“He’s got no interest in it,” Dobson said, according to the report. “He’s agreed to an extension. He’s committed to here.”

Roche has links to Ireland and Zimbabwe

Born and raised in Cape Town, Roche is eligible to represent Ireland through his paternal grandmother. He also has Zimbabwean eligibility through his father, giving him more than one possible international route.

Despite those connections, the Stormers coach made clear that Roche’s immediate ambition is to break through with South Africa. The centre has already attended a Springboks alignment camp, a sign that he remains on the radar of the national set-up.

Dobson said Roche wants to wear the South African green and gold, while also acknowledging the player’s close ties to Zimbabwe. For now, though, there appears to be no serious move towards Ireland, either at provincial or Test level.

What the story means for Irish rugby

The speculation was notable because Ireland’s provinces regularly recruit established talent from overseas, while the eligibility rules can create fresh options for the national team. A young centre with URC experience and Irish family connections would naturally attract attention from supporters following Ireland rugby and provincial recruitment.

That possibility now appears to have disappeared, at least in the short term. Roche is expected to remain with the Stormers, where his development will continue within the South African system and under the scrutiny of the Springboks selectors.

  • Roche grew up in Cape Town and has played his rugby in South Africa.
  • He is eligible for Ireland through his paternal grandmother.
  • He also has Zimbabwean eligibility through his father.
  • He attended a Springboks alignment camp in 2023.
  • Stormers boss John Dobson says Roche has agreed to extend his contract.

What happens next?

The immediate focus will be on Roche’s performances for the Stormers and whether his progress earns him a place in a future Springboks squad. Unless the club changes its position, the centre’s next chapter looks set to remain in South Africa rather than Ireland.
