Irish Rugby: Dramatic Finishes and Big Wins Shape Junior Cup Opening Round

Dromore and Kilfeacle impressed in the Energia All-Ireland Men’s Junior Cup, while Wicklow edged Mallow in a dramatic extra-time thriller.

The Energia All-Ireland Men’s Junior Cup began with high-scoring performances, tight contests and a remarkable extra-time finish. Across the opening round, Dromore, Kilfeacle & District, Omagh Academicals, Portadown, Boyne and Wicklow all secured their places in the next stage.

For followers of sports ireland, the weekend offered a strong reminder of the depth and competitiveness within Irish club rugby. While some ties were settled comfortably, Wicklow’s late victory over Mallow provided the round’s biggest drama.

Wicklow win extra-time thriller against Mallow

Wicklow survived a gripping contest in Mallow, eventually winning 21-17 after extra time. The visitors moved 14-0 ahead during the opening half, with Shane Farrar and Peter Schmidt crossing and Fionn Luddy converting both tries.

Mallow responded impressively. Sam Glynn scored before half-time, while Steven Finn crossed shortly after the restart. Barry Taylor added the conversions, bringing the sides level at 14-14.

Neither team could break the deadlock during normal time. Taylor’s penalty in the 93rd minute appeared to put Mallow in control, but Wicklow produced a decisive late response. Replacement Conal Slater crossed in the 100th minute and Ben Watson added the conversion to complete a dramatic turnaround.

Dromore deliver the round’s biggest statement

Last season’s finalists Dromore made an emphatic start by defeating Creggs 54-7 at Barban Hill. The hosts scored eight tries and were already 33-7 ahead at the interval.

Ryan Hanna, Rob Lyttle and Dean Dillon helped Dromore establish early control, while Harry Long and a second Dillon try extended the advantage before half-time. Adam McDonald then crossed twice after the break, with Jack Dillon adding another score.

Jonny Hunter was highly effective from the tee, converting seven of Dromore’s eight tries. Creggs’ only response came from Cathal Feely, converted by Shane Purcell, as Dromore underlined their ambition to go deep in the competition again.

Kilfeacle produce dominant home display

Kilfeacle & District were equally convincing, beating Suttonians 47-0 at Morrissey Park. Thomas Delaney opened the scoring after only three minutes, before Kevin Kinane crossed twice during a powerful first-half spell.

Jamie Heuston and Luke Heuston added further tries before the break, leaving Kilfeacle 33-0 ahead. Bryan McLaughlin and replacement Turlough Breen completed the scoring in the second half.

Luke Heuston contributed 17 points through a try and six conversions, while Kilfeacle’s defensive effort ensured Suttonians never found a way onto the scoreboard.

Omagh Academicals turn the screw after half-time

Omagh Academicals defeated Dunmore 43-14 at Fairgreen Pitches after a closely contested opening 40 minutes. A penalty try gave Omagh a narrow 7-0 lead at the interval.

The match changed quickly after the restart. Phil Ewing scored twice, with Matthew Clyde and Jamie Sproule also crossing as Omagh built a commanding advantage. Dunmore showed character through tries from Stephen O’Toole and Martin Cummins, both converted by Euan Brown.

Omagh finished strongly, with Joe Duff and Scott Barr adding late tries. The result secured a convincing away win and demonstrated the visitors’ ability to raise their intensity when the game opened up.

Boyne and Portadown advance with home victories

Boyne defeated Ballinasloe 27-15 at Shamrock Lodge in an entertaining encounter. Ballinasloe took an early lead through Cormac Finn, but Boyne responded through Rory Hennessy and captain Thomas Gregory to move 12-5 ahead.

Hugh Sowray and James Farrell then scored shortly after half-time, putting Boyne firmly in control. Ballinasloe remained competitive as Stephen Grenham crossed twice, but Luke Carley’s late try secured Boyne’s five-try victory.

Portadown also progressed after beating Bandon RFC 29-6 at Chambers Park. Bandon scored two first-half penalties through Daniel Coughlan, but Portadown’s stronger attacking threat proved decisive.

Scott Craig and Michael Orr crossed before the break, while Andrew Morrison scored twice after half-time. Kees Anderson added another try as Portadown completed a comfortable win.
