Irish Peacekeepers: Minister McEntee Pays Tribute During Southern Lebanon Visit

Minister McEntee has honoured Irish peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon as Ireland’s UNIFIL presence begins to wind down after almost 50 years.

Ireland’s long-standing peacekeeping mission in Southern Lebanon is entering a new phase. During a visit to Irish Defence Forces personnel serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Minister McEntee presented medals and praised their courage amid continuing regional conflict and humanitarian suffering.

Irish Peacekeepers Honoured in Southern Lebanon

Minister McEntee said she was honoured to present UNIFIL medals to Irish personnel serving in Southern Lebanon. Her visit came as Ireland’s presence in the region begins to wind down after almost five decades of service.

The minister thanked the troops for representing Ireland and supporting communities in an exceptionally dangerous environment. She highlighted their professionalism, bravery and contribution to regional stability despite continued conflict and instability.

Irish Defence Forces personnel deployed with UNIFIL have carried out duties focused on peacekeeping, protection and support for local communities. Their work forms part of Ireland’s broader international commitment to humanitarian assistance, international law and conflict prevention.

Department of Defence Discusses Lebanon’s Future

Following the visit, Minister McEntee was scheduled to meet Lebanon’s President, Justice Minister and Foreign Minister on 27 October. Discussions were expected to address the humanitarian situation, regional stability and the future of the UNIFIL mission after the Irish troop drawdown.

The meetings were also set to revisit Ireland’s commitment to accountability and justice in relation to the murder of Private Seán Rooney. The issue remains an important part of Ireland’s engagement with Lebanese authorities.

Key issues on the minister’s agenda

  • Regional stability and the continuing conflict in the Middle East
  • The humanitarian situation affecting civilians in Lebanon
  • The contribution of Irish peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL
  • Arrangements following the withdrawal of Irish troops
  • Accountability and justice for Private Seán Rooney’s murder

The Department of Defence said Ireland’s peacekeeping tradition remains an important element of the country’s foreign and security policy. The mission has also strengthened Ireland’s reputation as a country committed to multilateral cooperation through the United Nations.

Ireland’s Peacekeeping Legacy

For generations, members of the Irish Defence Forces have served overseas in challenging conditions. Their deployments have often required discipline, restraint and close engagement with communities affected by violence and displacement.

Minister McEntee’s comments underline the national significance of that service as Ireland’s role in Southern Lebanon changes. While the drawdown marks the conclusion of a historic deployment, the Government’s diplomatic engagement and support for international peacekeeping remain central to Ireland’s approach to global security.

Conclusion

The tribute to Ireland’s Irish peacekeepers recognises almost 50 years of service in Southern Lebanon and the risks undertaken on behalf of the country. As the mission winds down, Ireland’s commitment to humanitarian values, accountability and international cooperation remains clear.
