Ireland XV Set for Fiji ‘A’ Test as Cork Double-Header Takes Shape

Ireland XV will begin their 2026/27 campaign against Fiji ‘A’ at Virgin Media Park on 20 November as part of a Cork rugby double-header.

Ireland rugby will return to Cork this November when Ireland XV open their 2026/27 campaign against Fiji ‘A’ at Virgin Media Park. The fixture is designed to give emerging players valuable exposure to the standards and demands of the national set-up.

The Friday, 20 November meeting kicks off at 7.45pm and will be the first of three Ireland XV fixtures scheduled for the season. It also promises a full evening of rugby in Cork, with Ireland U20s facing Scotland earlier in an uncapped contest.

Ireland XV begin important development series

Although the game is not a senior Ireland international, it will carry real significance for players hoping to move closer to Andy Farrell’s wider selection picture. The Ireland XV programme is intended to bridge the gap between provincial rugby and the senior squad, offering players meaningful minutes against strong opposition.

Fiji ‘A’ should provide a demanding opening challenge. Fijian rugby is renowned for its physicality, speed and broken-field attacking, giving Ireland’s developing players an opportunity to test their decision-making and defensive organisation under pressure.

The programme will also allow coaches to assess players in a national environment while building depth across the squad. For supporters following ireland sports and Ireland rugby, the Cork fixture is an early chance to see potential future internationals competing together in green.

Three fixtures across the 2026/27 season

Following the Fiji ‘A’ game, Ireland XV will face Chile at Queen’s University in Belfast on Friday, 12 February. They will then travel to Sandy Park in Exeter to meet England ‘A’ on Saturday, 20 February, during the Guinness Men’s Six Nations window.

  • Friday, 20 November: Ireland XV v Fiji ‘A’, Virgin Media Park, 7.45pm
  • Friday, 12 February: Ireland XV v Chile, Queen’s University, Belfast
  • Saturday, 20 February: England ‘A’ v Ireland XV, Sandy Park, Exeter

The sequence gives the group a varied test of styles and conditions, from the pace and power expected against Fiji ‘A’ to the tactical demands of facing Chile and England ‘A’.

Mark Sexton to lead Ireland XV coaching team

Mark Sexton will coach Ireland XV, supported by Jimmy Duffy, Jared Payne and Seamus Toomey. The coaching group will be tasked with preparing players for the intensity of representative rugby while ensuring the wider pathway remains aligned with the senior international programme.

IRFU Performance Director David Humphreys described the Ireland XV pathway as an important part of player development. The programme gives players of national interest the chance to experience the expectations, standards and environment associated with senior international rugby.

That experience can be particularly important for players who have impressed at provincial level but have yet to establish themselves in the senior squad. Training alongside fellow contenders, preparing for international opposition and managing the pressure of a representative fixture can all help inform future selection decisions.

A special night of rugby in Cork

The Fiji ‘A’ match will form part of a double-header at Virgin Media Park. Ireland U20s, sponsored by PwC, will meet Scotland in an uncapped game at 5pm, giving supporters the chance to watch two developing Ireland teams on the same bill.

For young players, these matches are an important stage in the pathway from age-grade rugby to senior representative rugby. For fans, the double-header offers an opportunity to see the next generation before some of them progress into provincial and international squads.

Ticketing and broadcast information will be confirmed at a later date. Supporters planning to attend should watch for announcements from the IRFU and the relevant team channels.

What to watch when Ireland XV face Fiji ‘A’

  • Which emerging players are trusted with leadership roles?
  • How Ireland cope with Fiji’s physical challenge and attacking tempo.
  • Whether provincial form translates smoothly into representative rugby.
  • How the coaching group builds combinations ahead of the Belfast and Exeter fixtures.

The Cork game will not determine Ireland’s senior squad on its own, but it will offer useful evidence. Strong performances could place several players firmly into the conversation for future Ireland selection, while the overall series should provide a clearer picture of the depth available to Irish rugby.

The next step for Ireland’s emerging talent

Ireland XV’s meeting with Fiji ‘A’ is more than a standalone fixture. It is the opening chapter of a structured season aimed at preparing the next group of players for international rugby. With Chile and England ‘A’ still to come, the Cork double-header will set the tone for an important development programme.

For now, the focus turns to Virgin Media Park on 20 November, where Ireland’s emerging talent will face its first major test of the campaign.
