Dublin Digest: Stillorgan Library Opens as a New Community Hub

Stillorgan has entered a new chapter with the opening of a modern public library designed to support reading, study, technology and community life. The new facility is expected to become an important part of Dublin news, offering residents a larger and more flexible space than the former library.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council officially opened Stillorgan Library on 30 September 2026. The two-storey building at St Laurence’s Park will welcome the public from Thursday, 1 October.

Stillorgan Library brings expanded services to the community

The new library replaces the prefabricated building that served Stillorgan from the 1970s. Covering more than 1,000 square metres, it effectively doubles the available space and introduces facilities intended for users of all ages.

  • Flexible study and learning areas
  • Meeting rooms for community use
  • Public computers and digital technology services
  • Exhibition and cultural spaces
  • An outdoor courtyard
  • Improved accessibility and extended opening hours

The branch has historically welcomed more than 100,000 visits each year, serving communities including Stillorgan, Mount Merrion, Kilmacud, Leopardstown and nearby areas. Services operated temporarily from Stillorgan Village Shopping Centre after the former building closed in October 2021.

My Open Library access is also planned for the facility. Once introduced, the service is expected to increase access from 51 hours to 98 hours each week, giving members greater flexibility to use the library outside traditional staffed hours.

Public investment supports learning and regeneration

The project received €2.5 million through successive library capital programmes from the Department of Rural and Community Development. It forms part of a broader regeneration plan for St Laurence’s Park, which includes 88 social and affordable homes and improvements to the surrounding public realm.

Its location near the Lower Kilmacud Road and N11 junction is intended to strengthen links with public transport and active travel routes. The library therefore represents more than a new building: it is a civic space connected to wider plans for the area’s future.

At the opening, local representatives and government officials highlighted the library’s role in lifelong learning, digital inclusion, cultural activity and community connection. The facility is designed to host educational programmes, meetings, exhibitions and events alongside its traditional lending services.

A modern addition to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown’s library network

Stillorgan Library becomes the ninth public library in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. Together, the branches provide access to books, online resources, computers, learning opportunities and community programmes across the county.

For families, students and local groups, the new branch offers practical spaces to work, meet and learn. Its design also reflects the changing role of public libraries as welcoming, digitally connected destinations rather than places focused only on book lending.

What the opening means for local residents

The opening gives Stillorgan a permanent, purpose-built library after years of planning and temporary services. With improved facilities, stronger accessibility and future extended access, the branch is positioned to support the area for decades.

Key takeaway: Stillorgan Library is a significant cultural and community investment, combining study facilities, technology, events and public services in one modern hub at the heart of the district.
