Cork GAA Replay Appeal Gathers Pace After Scoring Dispute Changes Championship Result

Ballinora want a replay after a scoring error changed their Cork GAA championship draw against Fermoy into a one-point defeat.

Cork GAA club Ballinora are seeking another chance to settle their championship fate on the pitch after a scoring dispute turned a drawn game against Fermoy into a one-point defeat.

The McCarthy Insurance Group Cork Premier Intermediate Football Championship Group 3 meeting in Glenville had initially been recorded as a 2-15 apiece draw on September 12. That result would have sent Ballinora through to the knockout stages, but a successful objection by Fermoy has changed the picture completely.

Cork GAA scoring error changes quarter-final race

The dispute centres on two scores credited to Fermoy forward Ben Twomey during the closing stages of the first half. He registered a point in the 30th minute and followed it with a two-point score shortly afterwards.

Only one of those scores was included in the original total. After video evidence was considered, Fermoy’s tally was corrected from 0-21 to 0-22. Ballinora’s 2-15 score remained unchanged, transforming the official result from a draw into a 0-22 to 2-15 victory for Fermoy.

The difference is decisive. Both teams knew that victory would guarantee qualification, while Ballinora’s stronger scoring difference meant a draw would also have been enough for them to progress. The corrected result therefore ended Ballinora’s championship campaign, at least for now.

Fermoy advance to the last eight

Fermoy are now scheduled to face Rockchapel in the Cork Premier Intermediate Football Championship quarter-finals. The other quarter-final will see Macroom meet Naomh Abán, with both fixtures due to take place on Sunday week.

The decision leaves Fermoy preparing for a knockout tie while Ballinora consider whether any further avenue of appeal remains open.

Ballinora call for the game to be replayed

In a statement issued after the ruling, Ballinora expressed what it described as “huge disappointment” at the decision to award the game to Fermoy.

The club’s frustration is focused not only on the corrected score but also on the fact that the referee’s score was communicated at half-time and full-time as a draw. Ballinora argued that the officially announced result and the principles of fair play should carry significant weight after what had been a competitive game.

The club also believes the outcome has affected them disproportionately because the original draw would have secured qualification. Rather than ending the matter through an administrative ruling, Ballinora would prefer the teams to meet again and decide the outcome on the field.

Ballinora confirmed that it has contacted Fermoy directly to ask whether a replay could be considered. The club acknowledged that Fermoy may choose to accept the awarded victory, but said it would make a further appeal to its sporting colleagues.

“We would wish to be given the opportunity to conclude this matter on the field of play,” Ballinora said in its statement.

What happens next in Cork GAA?

For now, the revised result stands and Fermoy remain in the quarter-final draw. Ballinora said it is considering its position and will not make further public comment at this stage.

The case highlights how a single recorded score can have major consequences in the county championship, particularly when qualification depends on a narrow set of results and scoring margins. It also raises difficult questions around match administration, video evidence and the balance between correcting an official error and preserving the original contest.

There is no indication in the supplied information that a replay has been agreed. The immediate focus will therefore be on whether Fermoy and the relevant Cork GAA authorities respond to Ballinora’s request before the quarter-finals take place.

The next step: Ballinora’s request for a replay will be closely watched, but unless the decision changes, Fermoy will proceed to the quarter-finals against Rockchapel.
