Ireland is significantly increasing support for practical environmental innovation, with the 2026 Circular Economy Innovation Grant Scheme opening with a fund of €1.5 million. The announcement by Minister of State Alan Dillon gives businesses, social enterprises and community organisations an opportunity to turn circular economy ideas into projects that reduce waste and improve resource efficiency.
Funding has more than doubled from €650,000 in the previous round. Individual awards are expected to range from €50,000 to €150,000, supporting projects that can demonstrate clear environmental, economic and social benefits.
Circular Economy Funding Expands Across Ireland
Led by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, the scheme is aligned with Ireland’s Circular Economy Strategy 2026–2028. Its focus is on moving beyond research and policy development towards practical demonstrations, implementation and solutions that can be scaled.
Since the scheme began in 2021, more than €2.4 million has been awarded to 50 projects. Previous recipients have worked across food waste, plastics, packaging, construction, textiles and general waste.
Eligible initiatives may include:
- Redesigning products and packaging to reduce virgin or non-recyclable plastics
- Developing reusable construction materials and selective demolition methods
- Preventing food waste in production and commercial settings
- Recovering critical raw materials and reducing hazardous substances
- Advancing repair, reuse, remanufacturing and circular product design
Applications Managed by CIRCULÉIRE and IMR
For 2026, CIRCULÉIRE will administer the application, assessment and administrative process in partnership with Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR). The industry-led network will also support successful applicants as they deliver their projects.
The scheme places particular emphasis on higher-value circular strategies, including “as-is reuse”, repair, remanufacturing, industrial symbiosis and design approaches that keep products and materials in use for longer.
Key Dates for Circular Economy Grant Applicants
The 2026 funding round opened on 14 September 2026. Applications must be submitted by 11.59pm Irish time on 12 October 2026. An online information session is scheduled for 21 September, giving prospective applicants an opportunity to learn more about the process.
