Apply to School Ireland: Key Dates and Parent Guide for 2027 Secondary Places

Parents applying for a first-year place in a participating Irish secondary school for September 2027 should prepare now. The Apply to School Ireland pilot offers a single online application process, application tracking and clearer updates for families in participating areas.

Apply to School Ireland: Important dates for parents

The online system opens at midnight on 1 October 2026. Applications for the 2027–2028 school year should be submitted by 22 October 2026. Applications received after that date will be treated as late applications and considered under each school’s published admissions policy, where places remain available.

  • System opens: 1 October 2026
  • On-time application deadline: 22 October 2026
  • Offers issued: 12 November 2026
  • Offer acceptance deadline: 20 November 2026

The scheme applies only to students entering first year in participating post-primary schools. Parents should read the admissions policy for every school before submitting an application.

How to apply through the online school admissions system

Parents and guardians must create an account on the Apply to School Hub using a valid email address, username, secure password and security question. The email address is used for account registration, offer notifications and urgent communication from schools.

Applicants generally need to provide:

  • The student’s birth certificate
  • Two proofs of address
  • Supporting documentation for a special class application, where relevant

Documents can be uploaded from a computer or photographed and submitted using a mobile device. Special-class documents must be uploaded separately for each school to protect private information.

Mainstream and special class applications

Where a participating school has a special class, families may apply for a special-class place, a mainstream place, or both. The Department of Education and Youth says admission of children with special educational needs should be integrated within mainstream admissions arrangements.

Applying to more than one school

Families can apply to multiple participating schools, and the department recommends doing so because demand may exceed available places. The platform does not rank schools by preference. Each school assesses applications using its own admissions criteria.

Offers, waiting lists and application changes

Applicants receive an acknowledgement email from applytoschool@education.gov.ie after successfully submitting a form. This message includes a summary and application ID, so it should be kept safely.

Applications can be edited through the Parent Hub until 22 October. After the deadline, forms become read-only; parents who identify an error must contact the relevant school. Applications may be withdrawn, but withdrawal cannot be reversed.

Schools will publish offers in the Parent Hub on 12 November. Parents can accept or decline an offer online and may need to submit additional registration information. Acceptance is not confirmed until all required documentation has been provided. The department encourages families to accept only one place.

Children who qualify but are not offered a place may be placed on a waiting list. Schools determine waiting-list decisions according to their admissions policies. A waiting-list number can be viewed online, but it is a reference number and may not represent the child’s exact position.

Support for families without internet access

Parents without internet access or an email address should contact the school directly. Schools can help families complete the application. The Parent and Guardian User Guide is available through gov.ie and the Apply to School service.

Other public bodies, including Tusla, the Health Service Executive (HSE), the Citizens Information Board and the National Disability Authority (NDA), may provide wider family or support information, although applications and admission decisions remain the responsibility of participating schools.

Key takeaway for parents

The Apply to School Ireland pilot is designed to make post-primary admissions more transparent and easier to monitor. Create an account early, check every school’s admissions policy, upload complete documents and submit by 22 October 2026 to avoid late-application treatment.
