Round two of the 2026/27 Energia All-Ireland League brings an immediate test of ambition, with Blackrock College travelling to defending champions UL Bohemian in a repeat of last season’s Division 1A final. The weekend also features key Division 1B contests and four Energia Women’s All-Ireland Junior Cup quarter-finals.
For supporters following sports Ireland and Ireland sports news, this is a programme packed with early-season intrigue. Several teams are chasing a second straight win, while others need a response after difficult opening weekends.
Blackrock face champions UL Bohemian in headline clash
Blackrock College made the strongest possible start to their campaign, defeating Wicklow 50-5 with Andrea Murphy scoring a hat-trick. That result puts the visitors top of Division 1A and gives them confidence ahead of a demanding trip to Annacotty.
They also won 17-7 at UL Bohemian on their most recent visit, ending a run of away defeats stretching back to October 2022. However, the defending champions will have their own motivation after beginning the season with a narrow loss to Railway Union.
Chisom Ugwueru scored twice for UL Bohemian in that match, including a late try, but Sarah Quin’s team could not complete the comeback. Having defeated Blackrock in last season’s final, the Limerick club will be determined to produce a response against familiar opponents.
Railway Union aim to continue strong start
Railway Union travel to Galwegians after their impressive win over the champions. Rebecca Cahill marked her All-Ireland League debut with the decisive try, giving Adam Philpot’s side an early platform.
Railway also recorded a 36-7 victory at Crowley Park last January, but Galwegians will look to home advantage as they search for their first points. Emily Foley’s hat-trick in the defeat by Old Belvedere offered encouragement despite the 31-15 scoreline.
Elsewhere in Division 1A, Wicklow host Old Belvedere at Ashtown Lane. Wicklow were beaten heavily by Blackrock in round one but can draw on a 27-15 home victory over Belvo last February. The visitors arrive after a convincing win over Galwegians, during which Katie Whelan scored twice.
Newcomers Enniskillen and MU Barnhall target another win
Enniskillen’s first AIL appearance could scarcely have gone better. Zara Flack scored three tries as Rodney Balfour’s side defeated Tullow 32-12 with a bonus point. Their next challenge is an away meeting with Ballincollig.
Ballincollig lost 17-5 to fellow newcomers MU Barnhall in the opening round, with Niamh O’Mahony scoring their only try. Their first home fixture provides an opportunity to reset, but Enniskillen’s attacking confidence will make them dangerous opponents.
MU Barnhall travel to Ennis in another meeting between opening-round winners. Emer Sweetnam, Aoibhín Smith and Abby Healy all crossed in Barnhall’s debut victory, while Ennis secured a hard-fought win at Cooke through Rhona O’Dea’s decisive try.
Tullow and Cooke complete the Division 1B programme at Rathoe Road. Both clubs are seeking their first victory. The sides last met in March, when Tullow won 12-7 after tries from Leah Browne and Emma Carroll.
Junior Cup quarter-finals offer fresh opportunity
The Women’s All-Ireland Junior Cup also reaches the quarter-final stage, with a new champion guaranteed after MU Barnhall’s promotion and Enniskillen’s move into the league.
- Creggs v Queen’s University: The Belfast visitors return to the venue where they won last season’s quarter-final 44-5.
- Malone v Navan: Malone are back in the competition after reaching the 2024/25 final, while Navan arrive under former Ireland international Jackie Shiels.
- Shannon v Sligo: Shannon will want to improve on last season’s quarter-final exit, while Sligo return for the first time since the competition’s inaugural 2022/23 season.
Sligo’s women’s rugby development has benefited from the involvement of former Ireland internationals Mary Healy and Nicole Fowley. Their quarter-final in Shannon will offer a useful measure of that progress. The New Ross-Clonakilty tie has been postponed.
