The new season of sports Ireland gets a major boost this weekend as the Energia All-Ireland League Women’s competition returns with a new format, historic debuts and six fixtures across two divisions. The opening round takes place on Saturday, October 10, with defending champions UL Bohemian beginning their bid for a fourth successive title.
The 2026/27 campaign brings 12 teams together across Divisions 1A and 1B, creating a fresh competitive structure for women’s club rugby. Promotion and relegation will be decided through play-offs, meaning every point could carry significance as the season develops.
UL Bohemian begin title defence against Railway Union
The headline fixture in Division 1A sees Railway Union host UL Bohemian at Park Avenue in a repeat meeting between two of the competition’s leading clubs. Kick-off is at 5pm, with the match available live on IrishRugby+.
UL Bohemian remain the team to beat after winning three consecutive titles. The Limerick club will start as one of the favourites again, but Railway Union have shown they can unsettle the champions. Railway recorded a 46-19 victory at Park Avenue last March, although UL Bohemian won the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
Railway will also be motivated by the end of their long run of final appearances last season. Their response on the opening weekend could offer an early indication of whether they are ready to challenge for silverware again.
Old Belvedere and Galwegians seek an early statement
Old Belvedere welcome Galwegians to Ollie Campbell Park for the first Division 1A fixture at 2.30pm. Both clubs enter the season with ambitions of moving higher in the standings.
Belvo reached last season’s semi-finals before losing to UL Bohemian and finished fourth overall. The Dublin side have continued to develop and will see home advantage as an opportunity to begin strongly.
Galwegians were beaten in the previous campaign’s Conference final but have already demonstrated that they can compete with established opposition. Their win over Belvo at Energia Park last season should provide confidence before this latest meeting.
Blackrock face ambitious Wicklow
Blackrock College host Wicklow at Stradbrook at 5pm in an all-Leinster clash. Blackrock were beaten by UL Bohemian in last April’s final and will be determined to go one step further this time.
Wicklow arrive as Conference champions after an impressive campaign and will be eager to test themselves against one of the country’s strongest teams. Blackrock won the last meeting 44-7 in February, but Wicklow will hope their progress is reflected in a much closer contest.
Newcomers add intrigue to Division 1B
Division 1B brings its own storyline, with MU Barnhall and Enniskillen preparing for their first Energia All-Ireland League fixtures. Their arrival adds fresh energy to a competition that also includes clubs seeking promotion and others aiming to secure their place.
Cooke host Ennis at Shaw’s Bridge at 2.30pm. Ennis enjoyed an impressive first campaign, finishing seventh overall, and will now look to build towards the promotion places. Cooke retained their league status last season and will be hoping for greater consistency, particularly on home ground.
The sides produced a close contest last February, with Ennis winning 31-27. That result should add extra edge to the opening-round meeting.
MU Barnhall make history at Parsonstown
MU Barnhall welcome Ballincollig at 3pm for their first appearance in the national league. Barnhall have dominated junior rugby in recent seasons, winning four successive Energia Junior Cup titles, and now face the challenge of stepping up to the All-Ireland League.
Ballincollig will provide a demanding test. The experienced Cork club finished eighth last season and will be targeting a stronger campaign, with a promotion push likely to be their ambition.

Enniskillen prepare for landmark home fixture
Enniskillen’s meeting with Tullow at Mullaghmeen, scheduled for 5pm, will be another landmark occasion. The Ulster club have established themselves among the leading junior sides in the province and will now try to transfer that form to the national stage.
Tullow have valuable AIL experience after joining the competition three seasons ago. They secured their first league wins last season and then preserved their status by defeating Shannon in a relegation play-off. Avoiding another battle at the foot of the table will be a priority, while Enniskillen will be hoping to mark their debut with victory.

What to watch this weekend
The opening round offers more than a first set of results. UL Bohemian’s title defence, Railway Union’s response, Wicklow’s move into the top division and the debuts of MU Barnhall and Enniskillen will all help define the early narrative.
For supporters following irish sports and women’s rugby, the key question is whether the established contenders can hold their ground against ambitious challengers. The answer begins at Park Avenue, Stradbrook and the new Division 1B venues on Saturday.
