Christmas travel in 2026 could be more affordable for people willing to compare departure dates, destinations and booking windows. New KAYAK data highlights cheaper return flights from France, Germany and the UK, alongside hotel markets where average nightly prices have fallen compared with last year.
The figures are based on flight and hotel searches made between 1 April and 1 September for trips taking place from 19 December 2026 to 9 January 2027. They are average search prices rather than guaranteed fares, so availability and demand may change as the festive period approaches.
Cheapest Christmas flights from France, Germany and the UK
The best-value routes vary depending on where travellers begin their journey. For French passengers, several major European cities feature among the lowest-priced options:
- Milan from €126 return
- Brussels from €153
- Venice and Berlin from €161
- London from €169
Travellers departing from Germany can also find particularly competitive fares to Milan, with return flights starting at around €116. Other lower-cost routes include Rome from €169, Vienna from €170, Paris from €190 and London from €192.
For UK travellers, Dublin is the cheapest destination listed, with return flights from approximately £127, or €151. Barcelona follows at about £131, while Milan starts at £142. Prague and Madrid are also among the more affordable choices, with fares from around £143 return.
Hotel prices are falling in several European destinations
Flight prices are only one part of the Christmas travel budget. Hotel costs can make a significant difference, and the KAYAK figures identify several destinations where average nightly rates are lower than during the comparable period last year.
Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland recorded one of the largest European declines. Known for its Christmas attractions and Santa Claus tourism, the destination saw average accommodation prices fall by 22% to about €275 per night.
Other destinations with lower average hotel prices include:
- Istanbul: down 12%, averaging €76 per night
- Paris: down 5%, averaging €140
- Adeje in Tenerife: down 8%, averaging €235
- York: down 8%, averaging approximately £96, or €114
The figures do not mean every property will be cheaper. Hotel prices vary according to location, room type, cancellation terms and demand around Christmas and New Year.
Long-haul destinations with lower accommodation prices
Some long-haul destinations also appear more competitive for festive breaks. Koh Samui in Thailand recorded a 21% fall in average nightly prices to €115, while Bangkok was down 20% to €76. Tokyo prices fell 19% to €110, and Singapore rates declined 13% to €164.
Other reported reductions include an average of €916 per night in the Maldives, down 10%, and €273 in New York, down 11%. Fort-de-France in Martinique also saw prices fall by 10%, to around €123 per night.
When should travellers book Christmas flights?
Booking timing differs by departure country and route. Expedia data cited in the study suggests that international flights are often best booked roughly 15 to 30 days before departure, although Christmas demand can make waiting risky.
The KAYAK data indicates that:
- Travellers from Germany may see lower prices in December.
- French travellers may find better fares during the week before Christmas.
- UK travellers may benefit from booking around six weeks before Christmas.
The cheapest departure date for French and British travellers was identified as 23 December. For German travellers, 21 December was the lowest-cost date in the comparison. Across all three markets, New Year’s Eve was the cheapest day to fly out for those planning to travel after Christmas.
Cheapest hotel check-in dates
Hotel timing also varies by country and by whether the trip is domestic or international. In France, domestic accommodation was around 18% cheaper during the week before Christmas than at October prices. International hotel rates were approximately 7% lower when booked from late November into December.
For Germany, the two weeks before Christmas offered rates about 9% below mid-November peaks. In the UK, waiting until the fortnight before 25 December could reduce international accommodation costs by 16% and domestic stays by 20%, based on the study’s averages.
The lowest-cost check-in dates identified were:
- France: 21 December for domestic and international stays
- Germany: Christmas Day for domestic stays and 21 December abroad
- UK: 22 December for domestic stays and 23 December internationally
Where to find winter sun for less
Travellers seeking warmer weather may need to consider longer routes, but some destinations have become cheaper compared with the previous Christmas period.
For French travellers, flights to Casablanca and Rabat were down 19%, while Agadir was 12% cheaper. Koh Samui fares fell 17%, and Sri Lanka was 11% lower.
German travellers could find substantial reductions on flights to Lima, down 29%, Cairo, down 18%, and Port Louis in Mauritius, down 14%. Cancún and Marrakech were each down 8%.
For UK travellers, Agadir recorded a 26% fall in average flight prices. Flights to Kingston were down 21%, while Montego Bay was 18% cheaper in the comparison.
How to keep Christmas travel costs under control
The data suggests that flexibility may be more valuable than choosing a traditionally popular Christmas destination. Travellers can improve their chances of finding a lower price by:
- Comparing several departure dates rather than travelling on a fixed day.
- Checking nearby airports and alternative European cities.
- Comparing hotel prices for different check-in dates.
- Reviewing whether baggage, transfers and cancellation costs are included.
- Setting fare alerts while monitoring prices before booking.
Average prices can change quickly as seats and rooms sell, particularly around 25 December and New Year’s Eve. The cheapest option in a search comparison may also involve less convenient flight times or stricter booking conditions.
What the 2026 Christmas travel data shows
The KAYAK study points to lower-cost opportunities across European city breaks, festive destinations and long-haul winter-sun routes. Milan stands out for travellers from both France and Germany, while Dublin is the least expensive listed destination for UK departures. On the accommodation side, Rovaniemi, Istanbul and several Asian destinations recorded notable price declines.
For Christmas travel in 2026, the clearest takeaway is to compare both the destination and the date. A modest shift in departure or check-in day may have as much influence on the total cost as the choice of city itself.
