Troy Parrott’s promising start at Real Betis could now move up another level after a significant injury setback for fellow striker Cucho. The development may give the Ireland international the regular run of games he has been waiting for in Spain.
Parrott has impressed since joining Betis, scoring important goals and quickly winning over supporters. However, his minutes have been managed carefully by experienced manager Manuel Pellegrini, who has rotated his forwards while the club competes across several competitions.
Why Cucho’s injury matters for Troy Parrott
Parrott has shared the central striking role with Cucho this season. Both forwards have performed well, although the Colombian had been in particularly strong form, scoring three times in his previous six club appearances.
That momentum has now been interrupted. Real Betis confirmed that Cucho suffered a muscular injury during the recent defeat to Barcelona and is expected to miss at least a month.
The injury leaves Parrott as the only established fit central striker in the squad. While Pellegrini may still manage his workload, the circumstances should create a much clearer path to regular starts for the Irishman.
- Parrott is likely to receive more minutes through the busy schedule.
- He could start important domestic and European fixtures.
- A sustained run may help him establish himself as Betis’ first-choice striker.
Big fixtures offer Parrott a chance to make his mark
The timing presents a major opportunity. Parrott is expected to lead the line against Feyenoord in the Champions League, with further matches against Celta Vigo, Malaga and Borussia Dortmund scheduled in the following weeks.
Those fixtures will test his ability to influence games at the highest level. They also offer valuable exposure for Ireland football supporters tracking the forward’s progress ahead of future international matches.
Parrott has already shown that he can deliver in high-pressure moments. He scored the winning goals against Real Madrid and Lille, with the latter securing Betis’ first Champions League victory in more than 20 years.
Those contributions have helped change the mood around his arrival. Rather than being viewed simply as a promising signing, Parrott is now becoming an important attacking option for one of Spain’s leading clubs.
Can he turn opportunity into a permanent starting place?
The immediate challenge is to make the most of the additional responsibility without carrying the full burden of Betis’ attacking output. Pellegrini is expected to remain cautious with Parrott’s minutes, particularly during a demanding run of matches.
Even so, consecutive starts would give the striker a chance to build rhythm, improve his understanding with teammates and add to his goals tally. For a forward, regular involvement can be crucial to confidence and consistency.
It could also strengthen Parrott’s position with Ireland. Greater responsibility in La Liga and the Champions League would provide a useful platform as the national team continues to assess its attacking options.

The next step for Parrott
Cucho’s absence is undoubtedly a blow for Real Betis, but it represents a timely opening for Troy Parrott. If he can respond with goals, strong performances and consistency, the temporary opportunity may become a permanent place in Pellegrini’s plans.
For now, all eyes will be on the Champions League meeting with Feyenoord and the demanding run that follows. Those games could define the next stage of Parrott’s development at Real Betis.
