Sports Ireland: Blackrock Ready to Turn Final Heartbreak Into Annacotty Statement

Blackrock College return to Annacotty this Saturday carrying painful memories of last season’s Energia All-Ireland League final — but also the belief that they can finally overcome UL Bohemian. This is a major early test in sports Ireland, with two of the leading sides in Irish women’s rugby meeting at 5pm in a game broadcast live on IrishRugby+.

Blackrock face familiar rivals with unfinished business

Blackrock looked to have the 2025 final under control when Jillian O’Toole crossed late to put them ahead. However, Catriona Finn’s last-gasp score turned the match in UL Bohemian’s favour and delivered another league title to the Limerick club.

For Blackrock player Maggie Boylan, the defeat remains vivid. She had moved into the scrum-half role after Lauren Farrell-McCabe left the field injured, leaving her to help manage the tense closing stages while her side tried to protect its lead.

That experience will add an emotional edge to Saturday’s meeting, although Boylan insists the focus is on preparing properly rather than seeking revenge.

“It’s a new year,” she said, with Blackrock determined to be more clinical and trust the work completed during the week.

A demanding test for the champions

UL Bohemian are the reigning Energia All-Ireland League Women’s Division 1A champions, but their title defence began with a defeat to Railway Union. Blackrock, meanwhile, opened the campaign in emphatic fashion by beating Wicklow 50-5 at home.

The Dublin club ran in eight tries, with Andrea Murphy scoring three and Ava Fannin adding two. Cara Martin, Emily Whittle and Boylan also crossed the line in a result that immediately underlined Blackrock’s attacking threat.

Despite the margin of victory, Boylan believes the performance exposed areas that still require attention. New players, positional changes and the natural rustiness of an opening fixture mean Blackrock are treating the win as a starting point rather than a finished product.

Annacotty offers confidence as well as pressure

Blackrock have already shown they can win in Limerick. In the final round of last season’s regular campaign, they defeated UL Bohemian 17-7 at Annacotty, ending the hosts’ unbeaten home run. Boylan scored the opening try that day, giving the visitors a significant boost before their run to the final.

That result will provide useful confidence, but UL Bohemian’s record against Blackrock also demands respect. The champions won the opening meeting between the sides last season, recovering from a strong Blackrock first half to claim a 21-12 victory in Stradbrook.

The key lesson for Blackrock is consistency. They have repeatedly shown they can match UL Bohemian for long periods, but the champions have the experience to punish small lapses and change the course of a tight game.

Depth could prove decisive

One of Blackrock’s biggest advantages this season is the competition for places. Players moving up from the Leinster League side, alongside new arrivals, have increased the quality and intensity of training.

  • Competition for positions is pushing established players to maintain high standards.
  • Greater squad depth gives Blackrock more options during a demanding match.
  • Long-standing combinations in the backline can help with decision-making under pressure.
  • Training has focused on accuracy, detail and making better choices in key moments.

That internal competition has also strengthened the group. Several Blackrock backs have played together for years, while the wider squad is benefiting from the integration of younger and developing players.

What to watch when Blackrock meet UL Bohemian

The contest is likely to be shaped by how both teams respond to pressure. UL Bohemian will want to recover quickly from their opening defeat, while Blackrock will aim to build on their attacking start without becoming distracted by the final-day memories.

Blackrock’s ability to retain possession in the closing stages will be important. The same situation cost them dearly in April, when a brief period of uncertainty allowed UL Bohemian to seize the initiative. Their decision-making at half-back and the impact of their bench could therefore be central.

For Boylan and her teammates, the challenge is to turn the disappointment of last season into evidence of progress. Beating the champions in Annacotty would not settle the league, but it would send an early message in the women’s rugby campaign.

The next chapter in Irish women’s rugby

This fixture is only the second round of a long league season, so neither result nor performance will define the campaign. However, it offers both clubs a chance to establish momentum and measure themselves against a direct rival.

Blackrock have the recent away win, a strong opening result and growing squad depth behind them. UL Bohemian have the experience of champions and a clear understanding of how to survive close contests. The next step will be decided at Annacotty, where Blackrock hope this time to finish the job.
