For Beth Buttimer, an Ireland senior debut was the reward for two years of patience, preparation and persistence. The 21-year-old hooker finally pulled on the green jersey during Ireland Women’s hard-fought win over Japan at Galway’s Dexcom Stadium on Sunday.
Buttimer entered the match for the final 18 minutes, replacing Neve Jones, as Ireland worked to protect its advantage. Her arrival was greeted by a huge roar from family, friends and travelling supporters from UL Bohemian and Munster, turning a significant rugby moment into a deeply personal celebration.
Sports Ireland story: patience finally pays off
The Clonmel native had been close to Test rugby for some time. She spent the 2025 and 2026 Guinness Women’s Six Nations campaigns, as well as last year’s Rugby World Cup, travelling with the squad as a reserve without earning a cap.
That experience, however, helped prepare her for the intensity of international rugby. Buttimer said there were moments when her debut seemed distant, but the opportunity became even more satisfying because it had been earned rather than handed to her.
She had reportedly accumulated 17 or 18 travelling-reserve appearances before head coach Scott Bemand told her she was ready. The message reflected the standards within the Ireland Women’s set-up: players are expected to prove they belong at Test level.
Outstanding Munster form strengthened her case
Buttimer’s selection came after an exceptional Vodafone Women’s Interprovincial Championship with Munster. She helped the province retain the title and finished as the competition’s leading points and try scorer.
Her eight tries included six in Munster’s meeting with Leinster, while she also collected two player-of-the-match awards. Those performances made a compelling case for her inclusion and showed that she was ready to transfer her provincial form to the international stage.

Her first Test appearance was not limited to a ceremonial cameo. Buttimer made five tackles, carried strongly and handled her set-piece responsibilities after entering the game in the front row.

One factor that helped settle the young forward was the venue. Buttimer had already played at Dexcom Stadium four times in the previous six months for Munster and the Clovers, meaning the surroundings and match-day routine were familiar.
That familiarity proved valuable as she waited nervously on the sideline. Her first involvement was an immediate scrum, giving her a clear job to focus on rather than allowing the occasion to overwhelm her.
Once that opening set piece was completed, she was able to settle into the rhythm of the contest. It was a composed introduction for a player who had waited a long time for her opportunity.
A proud day for Clonmel and UL Bohemian
Buttimer’s debut also carried significance for the clubs and communities that shaped her. She first played at Rockwell College and with Fethard & District RFC before joining UL Bohemian, where she has become a valued member of the Munster rugby family.
Her family’s connection with Clonmel Rugby Club runs deep. Her father Fergal has served as director of rugby and now works as the club’s PRO, while her mother Suzanne is involved with the club shop and choir. Her brother Henry is entering his third season as club captain and had celebrated his own milestone the previous day after making his 50th Energia All-Ireland League appearance.
Buttimer became the first Clonmel RFC member to represent Ireland at senior level since Dave Foley in 2014. The presence of a large UL Bohemian contingent, including a prominent flag in the stand, underlined how many people had helped her reach the international stage.

Building the next generation of Ireland players
Buttimer’s route to the senior squad has included the Women’s National Talent Squad, Ireland’s Under-18 and Under-20 pathways and a strong provincial career. She scored twice on her Ireland Under-21 debut against England last May, as the team went on to complete a clean sweep in the Women’s U-21 Series.
Her progress was also supported by the IRFU’s centralised Women’s High Performance Programme. This is her second season on a full-time national contract, giving her the daily environment needed to develop her throwing, carrying, defensive work and decision-making.
Her first cap is therefore both a reward and a starting point. Ireland’s coaching staff will now assess how she can push for further involvement during the remainder of the WXV Series and beyond.
A team-mate valued inside the camp
The reaction from Ireland’s squad showed that Buttimer is already highly regarded within the group. Her team-mates celebrated her selection and welcomed her into the match-day 23, reflecting the close connection that has developed in the camp.
After the game, the emotional moment continued as she reunited with her family and performed her first-cap song, “Horse Outside” by the Rubberbandits. Music is an important part of the Buttimer family, adding another personal detail to an already memorable occasion.
