Southwest Airlines to Introduce Silver, Gold and Platinum Rapid Rewards Tiers in 2027

Southwest Airlines will redesign its Rapid Rewards loyalty programme from 1 January 2027, replacing its current elite-status structure with Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers. The changes will also introduce Milestone Rewards and a faster route to status for eligible Rapid Rewards credit cardholders.

The overhaul is part of a wider shift at the US airline, which has also moved to assigned seating and is developing airport lounges with Chase. Although Southwest does not operate a European network, the changes may interest Irish and European travellers who connect through the United States or regularly fly on domestic US routes.

What is changing in Southwest Rapid Rewards?

Southwest will reorganise its existing elite categories when the revised programme takes effect. Customers currently holding A-List status are expected to move into Silver, while A-List Preferred members will transition to Gold.

Platinum will become the new highest tier, giving frequent Southwest customers an additional status level to work towards. The precise qualification thresholds and full benefit conditions should be checked in the airline’s official programme information before travellers make booking or credit-card decisions.

  • Silver: the replacement for A-List status.
  • Gold: the replacement for A-List Preferred status.
  • Platinum: a new top tier for customers meeting the applicable requirements.

This structure is intended to recognise regular customers more progressively, rather than concentrating benefits only among members who reach the highest existing categories.

Platinum members to receive expanded Companion Pass benefits

One of the most significant announced changes concerns the Companion Pass. Eligible Platinum members will be able to use Companion Pass benefits for unlimited trips with a designated companion, subject to the programme’s conditions.

The benefit could be valuable for customers who frequently travel together within the United States. However, the real value will depend on the rules governing eligibility, available seats, taxes and fees, and the conditions attached to each booking. Travellers should not assume that every flight or itinerary will qualify automatically.

Southwest’s Companion Pass has long been associated with frequent-flyer rewards. By linking broader access to the new top tier, the airline is creating an additional incentive for its most active customers to concentrate their travel with Southwest.

Milestone Rewards will recognise progress before elite status

The revised Rapid Rewards programme will also include Milestone Rewards. These benefits are designed to give qualifying customers rewards as they progress towards the next membership level.

That means members may receive recognition before reaching Silver, Gold or Platinum, depending on the final programme rules. For travellers who fly several times each year but do not qualify immediately for the highest tier, milestone benefits could make continued participation more worthwhile.

The system may also influence booking decisions. A customer approaching a milestone could choose Southwest for another eligible journey instead of using a competing airline, although travellers should compare fares, schedules and total costs rather than pursuing rewards alone.

Eligible credit cardholders will have a faster path to status

Southwest also plans to provide qualifying Rapid Rewards credit cardholders with a faster route towards elite status. The change strengthens the connection between airline activity and Southwest’s co-branded card products.

Credit-card users should review the full conditions before relying on this pathway. Annual fees, qualifying activity, spending requirements and other restrictions may affect whether the arrangement offers good value. The revised programme should not be treated as a guarantee of status simply because a customer holds a Southwest card.

Assigned seating and airport lounges form part of a wider transformation

The loyalty changes arrive as Southwest continues to move away from some of its most recognisable traditional practices. For travel beginning on 27 January 2026, the airline introduced assigned seating, replacing its long-standing open-seating approach.

Passengers can now select seats according to their fare bundle and the options available at the time of booking. Premium seating options are also part of the revised approach, giving travellers more control over where they sit before departure.

Southwest is also working with Chase on lounge facilities at four US airports:

  • Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport
  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu
  • Nashville International Airport

The lounges are planned for completion by 2027. Together with the seating and loyalty changes, the projects show Southwest placing more emphasis on differentiated services both at the airport and onboard its flights.

What does this mean for travellers from Ireland?

The programme changes are primarily relevant to passengers flying within the United States. Southwest is not an Irish or European airline, so the announcement does not directly alter flights from Dublin, Cork or Shannon to Europe.

Irish travellers connecting through the United States may nevertheless be affected if they use Southwest for a domestic sector. Existing Rapid Rewards members should check how their status will transfer, while frequent US travellers may wish to compare the new qualification rules with the benefits of other loyalty programmes.

Before booking specifically to earn status, passengers should confirm:

  • Whether their route and fare qualify for Rapid Rewards credit.
  • How the new tier thresholds will be calculated.
  • Which Companion Pass taxes, fees and restrictions apply.
  • How Milestone Rewards will be issued and redeemed.
  • Whether a credit-card pathway justifies any annual fee.

What happens next?

The announced changes are due to begin on 1 January 2027. Southwest customers should monitor the airline’s official Rapid Rewards communications for the final qualification rules, status-matching details and benefit restrictions before planning travel around the new system.

For frequent Southwest passengers, the key takeaway is that loyalty benefits will become more tiered and potentially more valuable at the top level. The new Platinum category, broader Companion Pass access, milestone incentives and credit-card advantages could reward regular customers, but the practical value will depend on the detailed terms and the traveller’s actual flying pattern.
