Construction of a major capacity upgrade at Sligo University Hospital is moving forward, with a new 42-bed development expected to strengthen inpatient services and support future clinical expansion. The HSE has confirmed that the project is now entering its next phase, including foundation works.
Sligo University Hospital 42-bed project progresses
Work on the extension began in the second quarter of 2025. The development will deliver two new 21-bed wards, creating 42 additional inpatient beds for Sligo University Hospital. Each ward will include single ensuite rooms and supporting facilities.
The new accommodation is designed to improve:
- Patient privacy and comfort
- Infection prevention and control
- Inpatient capacity across the hospital
- The hospital’s ability to manage current demand
The project represents an interim capacity enhancement ahead of the planned Multi-Service Block. It is also part of a wider infrastructure strategy intended to improve hospital services across the northwest.
Temporary entrance at Sligo University Hospital from 21 September
From Monday, 21 September, the main public entrance will temporarily move to facilitate construction. The alternative entrance is located on the Mall, close to the Hospice side of the hospital and approximately 25 metres from the existing entrance, also known as the Renal entrance.
The temporary arrangement is expected to remain in place for around 12 to 14 weeks. Patients and visitors should follow on-site signage and allow extra time for their journey. Directions will also be provided in appointment letters.
The temporary entrance can be used to reach:
- Outpatient department clinics
- Day services
- Hospital wards
Anyone attending with an emergency should continue to use the Emergency Department entrance. The hospital shuttle bus will continue running between the public car park and the temporary main entrance.

Future clinical services included in the design
Alongside the additional beds, the development includes a shell-and-core area. This space has been planned to support a future Cardiology CT unit and an expanded Day Oncology Services area.
By incorporating this provision during the current build, the hospital can develop services in stages and reduce the need for significant structural alterations later. The planned expansion is intended to support improved access to specialised care while helping ease pressure on existing hospital facilities and emergency services.
Hospital Manager Grainne McCann described the investment as important to the future of Sligo University Hospital and acknowledged that construction may cause temporary disruption for patients, visitors and staff.
