Parents planning ahead for post-primary education in Ireland will soon have access to a new digital admissions process. The gov.ie Applytoschool.ie pilot will allow families in selected areas to apply online for first-year places for the 2027/28 school year.
Published by the Department of Education and Youth, the pilot is intended to test a simpler application system while giving parents clearer information about school admissions, supporting documents, offers and waiting lists.
School applications Ireland: key dates for families
The online application form will open on 1 October 2026. Parents and guardians must submit applications by 22 October 2026. Schools are scheduled to issue offers on 12 November 2026, with responses due between 12 and 20 November.
The pilot covers participating post-primary schools in ten areas:
- Athenry
- Celbridge
- Clonakilty
- Greystones
- Kilbeggan
- Kilcoole
- Maynooth
- Oranmore
- Rosscarbery
- Tullamore/Killina
Schools involved include community colleges, Catholic schools, multidenominational schools, Irish-medium schools and schools serving boys, girls or mixed enrolments. Families should review each school’s published admissions policy before applying.
Documents required for an application
To avoid delays, applicants should prepare the child’s birth certificate and up to two proofs of address, such as utility bills or bank statements. Applications for special classes require additional evidence.
Accepted file formats include JPG, JPEG, PDF, PNG, TIFF, TIF and BMP. Files must be clear, correctly oriented and no larger than 10MB. Multi-page documents should be combined into one file before uploading.

How admissions and oversubscription will work
Under the Education (Admission to Schools) Act 2018, schools must operate admissions policies that are fair, transparent and non-discriminatory. Each school determines its own selection criteria and priority order, while the Department of Education and Youth does not set individual school criteria.
Where applications exceed available places, schools must apply their published oversubscription rules. Children who do not receive an offer may be placed on a school waiting list, but a waiting list does not guarantee a place. Parents are therefore advised to consider any definite offer received.
Special class applications
The same online form can be used to apply for mainstream places, special classes or both. Supporting documentation may include professional reports, evidence of the child’s level of need, a recommendation on the most suitable educational placement and an NCSE letter of eligibility for the 2027/28 school year.
