Annual support payment issued to eligible carers in Ireland

Thousands of households across Ireland will welcome today’s update on the gov.ie and Citizens Information ecosystem: the annual Carer’s Support Grant has been paid on 4 June 2026. The once-yearly payment is worth €2,000, giving carers an important financial boost as the State continues to recognise the essential role they play in family care, disability support, and community wellbeing.

The annual payment is especially relevant for people already linked to the Social Protection system, but it also matters for carers who may not realise they can still qualify. As with many public service supports administered across Ireland, understanding the rules early can help avoid missed entitlements.

Who can get the annual payment for carers?

The grant is a non-means-tested payment, meaning income is not used to assess eligibility. People will automatically receive the annual payment if they are already getting one of the following:

  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Carer’s Benefit
  • Domiciliary Care Allowance

If you care for more than one person, a separate grant may be paid for each person you look after. This makes the annual payment particularly significant for households with multiple caring responsibilities.

Even if you do not receive one of the listed payments, you may still qualify if you meet the core conditions. Applicants generally must:

  • Be aged 16 or over
  • Live in Ireland
  • Provide full-time care for at least 6 months
  • Have that 6-month period include the first Thursday in June
  • Live with the person receiving care, or satisfy the alternative residency rules where applicable

How the Social Protection grant works in practice

The annual payment is designed to support carers with the added costs that often come with full-time caring, from transport and household bills to medical routines and reduced work flexibility. While the payment itself is widely associated with Social Protection, many carers also interact with other public bodies such as the Health Service Executive (HSE), Tusla, the Citizens Information Board, and the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) when navigating broader care, family, or employment questions.

Applications for a Carer’s Support Grant can be made from April in the relevant year up until 31 December of the following year. That extended deadline is useful for people who were eligible but did not apply immediately.

Why this update matters for carers and families

For many families, the annual payment is more than a routine State support. It is a practical acknowledgment of unpaid care work that underpins the wider Health, Disability, and Social Protection systems. It also sits within a broader network of public administration that includes departments such as Health, Finance, Children/Disability/Equality, and Enterprise, Trade and Employment, alongside information channels like gov.ie.

Carers who are unsure about their entitlement should review the eligibility conditions as soon as possible. In some cases, people assume they do not qualify because they are not on a main carer-related payment, when the rules may still allow an application.

In short, the annual payment offers timely support to eligible carers and can provide meaningful relief in a year of rising living costs. If you are providing full-time care in Ireland, now is the time to check whether the annual payment applies to you and to act before the application window closes.
