Amber Barrett did it again. On a wet, noisy night in Cork, the Republic of Ireland women found a winner in the 90th minute to beat the Netherlands 3-2 and carry a real World Cup chance into next week’s final qualifier in France.
It was the kind of finish that lifts a ground clean off its feet. Barrett turned home late after Anna Patten had nodded the ball back across goal, and Páirc Uí Chaoimh erupted. Before that, Kyra Carusa had opened the scoring in the first half, while Abbie Larkin restored Ireland’s lead moments after the Dutch equalised from the spot.
A night of nerve, noise and one huge step for the Republic of Ireland women
This was more than a result. It was a performance full of grit and belief from Carla Ward’s side, who were missing key players but never let that become the story. Ruesha Littlejohn brought calm and craft early on, Marissa Sheva caused problems out wide, and Caitlin Hayes was immense at the back when the pressure came.
The Netherlands had their moments. Dominique Janssen scored from the penalty spot after Courtney Brosnan got a hand to it, and Victoria Pelova produced a fine finish to make it 2-2. But the Republic of Ireland women kept going. That has been a hallmark of this team.
What it means now
- Ireland go to Grenoble knowing victory over France would seal automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
- The squad showed depth, with Larkin, Carusa and Barrett all delivering in key moments.
- The atmosphere in Cork underlined how closely this Republic of Ireland women team has connected with supporters.
There was late drama too, with Leanne Kiernan sent off in stoppage time, but Ireland held firm. And that is what people will remember most: the noise, the rain, and Barrett arriving right on cue. The Republic of Ireland women are still standing, still swinging, and now one game from something special.
