Kildare GAA Thriller: Bergin Brothers’ 20-Point Masterclass Ends in Heartbreak

Few championship performances can match the scoring contribution delivered by the Bergin brothers, but their remarkable display ended in disappointment as Grangenolvin lost a dramatic Kildare GAA semi-final to Suncroft after extra-time.

The brothers combined for 20 points in an extraordinary Kildare Intermediate Football Championship contest, yet Suncroft held on to win 3-17 to 0-25 after a match that swung wildly from one side to the other.

Sports Ireland: Bergin brothers produce stunning scoring display

Grangenolvin’s attack was driven almost entirely by the Bergins. Conall Bergin finished with 10 points, including nine from play, while his brother Fionn also contributed 10. Together, they accounted for four-fifths of Grangenolvin’s total score.

Their individual accuracy was even more remarkable given the circumstances. Grangenolvin appeared to be out of the contest at half-time, trailing by 3-8 to 0-5 after Suncroft found the net three times.

Conn Kehoe scored twice in the opening period, with Eoin Magee also raising a green flag. Suncroft’s direct attacking approach created a 12-point interval advantage and left Grangenolvin facing a huge challenge.

A comeback that nearly changed the game

Suncroft extended the lead to 14 points with the first two scores of the second half, but Grangenolvin then produced a remarkable response. The Kildare side showed patience in possession, improved their shot selection and began to find the Bergin brothers in dangerous areas.

Conall was particularly influential during the revival. His accurate long-range shooting kept the comeback alive, while Grangenolvin’s defensive pressure limited Suncroft’s opportunities to add to their lead.

The equaliser eventually arrived through Conall Bergin, bringing the teams level at 3-11 to 0-20 at the end of normal time. From a 14-point deficit, Grangenolvin had forced extra-time and appeared to have seized the momentum.

Suncroft find the decisive score

Despite the extraordinary recovery, Grangenolvin could not complete the turnaround. Fionn Dowling struck the winning point during extra-time, giving Suncroft the narrow advantage they needed.

Grangenolvin had one final opportunity when Fionn Bergin attempted a long-range free late in the additional period. The effort fell short, confirming a one-point defeat and ending a memorable campaign for the club.

Strong season ends for Grangenolvin

The result was a painful conclusion to a hugely positive period for Grangenolvin. The club had won Kildare and Leinster junior titles the previous year before stepping up to intermediate level, and their attacking football continued to make an impression.

The semi-final showed both the quality and resilience within the team. Recovering from a 14-point deficit in a county championship match required composure, fitness and belief, even if the final result went against them.

For Suncroft, the victory secures progress from a thrilling semi-final and underlines their ability to withstand sustained pressure. For the Bergins, the contest will be remembered as one of the most productive brotherly scoring performances in recent Kildare GAA championship action.
