Ken Hogan Adds Another Landmark Chapter to Remarkable Club Hurling Record

Ken Hogan’s extraordinary influence on club hurling has grown again, with The Harps securing their first Laois senior championship after a commanding 2-23 to 0-13 victory over Camross at Laois Hire O’Moore Park. The triumph adds another memorable chapter to one of the most impressive stories in modern GAA club management.

For The Harps, the win represents a breakthrough built on resilience, detailed preparation and a determination to turn underage promise into senior success. For Hogan, it is his eighth senior county hurling title across five different clubs in Laois and Offaly.

Sports Ireland: The Harps Complete Historic Laois Breakthrough

The Durrow-Cullohill club had endured a difficult start to the championship, losing to Camross in the opening round. Their response, however, was emphatic. The Harps won each of their next seven championship matches before returning to face Camross in the final.

There was little doubt about the outcome once the game settled. The Harps led 1-11 to 0-8 at half-time and continued to pull away after the interval, eventually winning by 16 points.

  • Justin Duggan finished with 1-3.
  • Ross Deegan also found the net.
  • Ciaran Comerford contributed six points.
  • The Harps collected their first Laois senior hurling title.

The result was particularly significant after the club’s relegation experience the previous year. Hogan said the players were determined to respond, having already enjoyed success at minor and under-20 level.

“The lads were out to make amends in a big way and thankfully we got over the line,” Hogan explained after the final.

A Winning Formula Built Around the Team

Hogan’s approach has consistently combined tactical preparation with a strong emphasis on collective responsibility. At The Harps, that meant regular discussion with players, detailed video analysis and a clear message that individual ambition had to serve the group.

His central mantra was simple: “team before me”. The performance in the final suggested that the players had fully embraced it. The Harps were composed in possession, clinical when chances arrived and disciplined enough to maintain their advantage throughout the second half.

That blend of preparation and culture has made Hogan a respected figure in Irish sports and county GAA circles. His success has not been limited to one county or one generation of players.

Eight senior titles across five clubs

Hogan’s club record began with Birr, whom he guided to Offaly glory in 1991 while he was still playing as a Tipperary goalkeeper. That victory ended Birr’s 20-year wait for a county title.

He later won two Offaly senior championships and a Leinster title with Coolderry. His spell with St Rynagh’s produced three consecutive Offaly senior crowns between 2019 and 2021.

Hogan had previously delivered a first Laois senior title for Borris-Kilcotton in 2016. The Harps’ achievement therefore becomes his second maiden senior championship success in the county.

Success beyond senior hurling

The Hogan record extends beyond senior county titles. In 2023, he managed Lorrha to the Tipperary premier intermediate championship, securing promotion to the senior grade.

He also produced a remarkable double in 2021. On the same day that St Rynagh’s completed their three-in-a-row, Hogan first guided Lorrha’s camogie team to the Tipperary Junior B championship before travelling to Tullamore for the Offaly final.

His achievements also include Tipperary’s 2010 All-Ireland under-21 success and a Ryan Cup victory with Maynooth University. Together, those honours underline his ability to develop teams, manage pressure and build belief across different levels of the game.

What comes next for The Harps?

The immediate task for The Harps is to build on the breakthrough. A first senior county title changes expectations, but it also gives the club a platform for further progress. The players now have the experience of winning a major final, while the club can look ahead with renewed confidence.

For Hogan, the latest medal strengthens a remarkable legacy in GAA management. The next challenge will be helping The Harps turn a historic first into sustained success in Laois hurling.
