James McClean Clarifies Mental Health Comments After Backlash

James McClean has clarified controversial mental health comments, saying he was speaking about his own experience and supports anyone seeking therapy.

James McClean has addressed the controversy surrounding his comments on therapy and men’s mental health, insisting that his words were taken out of context. The former Republic of Ireland international said he was describing his own experience rather than criticising anyone who seeks professional support.

The issue emerged during interviews promoting his autobiography, The Walls. Remarks published from a conversation with Paul Kimmage attracted widespread criticism after McClean described speaking to a psychologist as “weak” and said he preferred coping through exercise and the gym.

James McClean says comments were personal, not a wider judgement

Speaking to Brendan O’Connor on RTÉ Radio One, McClean said the criticism followed the circulation of a short extract rather than the full discussion. He argued that the published context made clear he was talking about his own choices and experiences.

“I was solely speaking on me,” McClean said, while acknowledging that his use of the word “weakness” was poorly judged. He added that anyone who needs therapy should be strongly supported and praised, even though he believes exercise has been his own most effective outlet.

McClean also admitted that his approach has involved bottling up emotions. He said he is not perfect and described social media as a particular difficulty, explaining that he can react defensively when he feels attacked.

A wider conversation about men’s mental health

The controversy has opened a familiar debate in Irish sport. Players and former players are increasingly speaking about pressure, isolation, injury, retirement and the emotional demands of professional football. While some athletes find structure in training, exercise or time with family, others benefit from counselling, therapy or specialist medical care.

There is no single route through a mental health struggle. The important distinction is that a personal coping method should not be presented as a substitute for help when someone is at risk or unable to manage alone.

Pressure surrounding McClean’s return to Derry City

McClean’s comments came against the backdrop of a difficult return to his hometown club, Derry City. The 103-cap Ireland player said the situation has affected him deeply and described feeling let down after returning with expectations that he says were not fulfilled.

He said football has been central to his identity throughout his life and that being removed from the environment he loves has been extremely difficult. McClean also acknowledged that he is not claiming to be blameless, but maintained that the current circumstances have placed him under significant strain.

His wife, Erin, had previously issued a public statement indicating that she disagreed with aspects of his comments. McClean said the ongoing dispute and the reaction to his interview had added to an already challenging period.

Why the clarification matters

In Ireland sports news, comments from high-profile footballers can quickly reach audiences far beyond the original interview. A brief excerpt can dominate the conversation, particularly when it concerns sensitive subjects such as therapy and emotional wellbeing.

McClean’s clarification does not erase the reaction to his wording, but it provides more detail about what he intended. His position is that the gym and exercise have helped him cope, while people who need therapy should be encouraged to seek it without shame.

  • McClean said he was speaking about his own experience.
  • He acknowledged that describing therapy as “weakness” was a mistake in wording.
  • He said he could not praise highly enough anyone who seeks professional help.
  • He admitted that social media and his current football situation have affected him.

The next chapter for McClean

The immediate focus will be on how McClean’s situation at Derry City develops and whether his clarification changes the public conversation around his remarks. His comments have also reinforced an important message for Irish sport: seeking support is not a sign of failure, and different people may need different forms of help.
