James McClean Breaks Silence on Derry City Dispute as Return Remains Unclear

James McClean has broken his silence on his prolonged absence from Derry City, issuing an apology to supporters while challenging the circumstances surrounding his continued omission from the team. The statement, released through the Players’ Football Association of Ireland (PFAI), has added another twist to one of the most closely watched stories in Irish football.

The former Republic of Ireland international says he is fit, training fully and ready to contribute, despite not featuring for the Candystripes since July. His intervention leaves Derry City supporters waiting for clarity over whether the experienced winger will return to the squad or whether his time at the club is effectively over.

McClean claims he was signed without a medical

According to the PFAI statement, McClean joined Derry City in January without undergoing a medical examination. He returned to his hometown club after 15 years in English football, having most recently played for Wrexham.

The 37-year-old acknowledges that he has experienced intermittent problems with a hip injury. However, he says he is currently “fit and well” and has completed full training for approximately nine weeks. The statement also claims that McClean played in an internal match during that period.

McClean maintains that he has not been given a satisfactory explanation for his absence from the matchday squad. His position is that he remains capable of playing a meaningful role in the League of Ireland and that he should be judged fairly on his fitness and performances.

Contract dispute adds to growing tension

The disagreement appears to be linked to a contract issue that emerged in August, when reports circulated that Derry City had terminated McClean’s deal. The player’s representatives say the club relied on Section 18 of the Standard Players’ Contract, which allows termination with six months’ notice where a player is considered permanently incapacitated.

McClean’s statement argues that no assessment by an agreed independent physician has taken place. It further claims that an orthopaedic surgeon reached the opposite conclusion last month, finding that he was not permanently incapacitated.

Legal advice has reportedly been provided to McClean by the PFAI’s solicitor, Stuart Gilhooly SC. The dispute now raises questions about contractual due process, player welfare and the responsibilities of League of Ireland clubs when dealing with players managing long-term physical issues.

A difficult relationship with the club

McClean’s return to Derry was initially welcomed as a major moment for the club and its supporters. However, the relationship deteriorated during the season.

While sidelined, he became involved in public exchanges with sections of the support. He also criticised aspects of the club and former manager Tiernan Lynch during RTÉ punditry coverage of the World Cup. Tensions increased after McClean questioned his failure to play in the European qualifier against Rijeka.

Lynch has since left Derry City, but the change in manager has not resolved McClean’s situation. Mark Connolly, Lynch’s successor, previously indicated that the route back into the first team would be complicated.

McClean apologises to Derry supporters

Alongside his claims about the contract and his fitness, McClean offered an apology to Derry City fans. He admitted that some of his actions had been misjudged and said his frustrations should have remained within the club.

He explained that he returned home in good faith after being presented with a vision for both his playing role and his future beyond football. The move also involved relocating his family during the school year, a decision he says was made because he believed in the commitments presented to him.

McClean said he accepts responsibility when he is wrong, but remains unable to understand or accept how he has been treated in recent months. He also insisted that he, rather than anyone else, will decide when his playing career is finished.

“I will decide when I retire. Nobody else will make that decision for me,” McClean said in his message to supporters.

His comments underline the personal nature of the dispute, while also highlighting wider concerns about player protection and fairness in the League of Ireland.

What happens next for Derry City and McClean?

The immediate question is whether McClean will be considered for selection again. He says he is ready to play, but the club has yet to publicly confirm whether he remains part of its plans or respond in detail to the claims made through the PFAI.

Any resolution could involve further discussions between the player, Derry City and the players’ union. If the contractual disagreement cannot be settled, the matter may develop into a formal employment or sporting dispute.

For Derry supporters, the situation is particularly frustrating. McClean’s return was meant to symbolise ambition, local pride and a connection between the club and one of the most recognisable Irish footballers of his generation. Instead, it has become a complicated story involving injuries, public criticism, contractual rights and a fractured relationship.

The bigger League of Ireland issue

McClean’s case could also prompt broader discussion around medical assessments, ageing players and the duty of care owed by clubs. Experienced footballers can still make an important contribution, but clubs must balance squad planning with clear medical and contractual procedures.

For now, the next step rests with Derry City. The club’s response, and whether McClean is brought back into contention, will determine the next chapter of this increasingly tense League of Ireland story.
