Irish Rugby: Railway Union Stun Champions as Women’s All-Ireland League Begins

The new women’s Energia All-Ireland League season began with a major statement in Dublin, as Railway Union defeated reigning champions UL Bohemian 19-15. Across both divisions, opening-round wins for Blackrock College, Old Belvedere, Enniskillen, MU Barnhall and Ennis set an early competitive tone for Irish rugby.

Railway Union deliver the opening weekend’s biggest result

Railway Union produced the headline result at Park Avenue, overturning an early deficit to beat UL Bohemian in a tightly fought Division 1A contest.

UL Bohemian started sharply when Chisom Ugwueru crossed inside the first five minutes. Railway Union answered through Sydney Davis, with Heidi Lyons converting, but the champions regained the lead before half-time when Teni Onigbode touched down.

Trailing 10-7 at the interval, Railway Union changed the momentum after the restart. Ailsa Hughes scored in the 48th minute and Lyons added the conversion to put the hosts in front. Rebecca Cahill then crossed late in the game to give Railway valuable breathing room.

Ugwueru’s second try in the 79th minute created a nervous finish, but Railway Union’s defence held firm. The victory gives the Dublin club an early boost and leaves the defending champions with ground to recover in the opening stages of the campaign.

Blackrock and Old Belvedere make strong starts

Blackrock College also opened with maximum points, overwhelming Wicklow 50-5 at Stradbrook. Andrea Murphy was central to the result, scoring a first-half hat-trick as Blackrock built a 40-0 lead before the break.

Ava Fannin scored twice in the opening half, while Cara Martin also crossed. Murphy completed her treble before half-time, with Abby Moyles converting five of Blackrock’s early tries. Maggie Boylan and replacement Emily Whittle added further scores after the interval, while Wicklow’s late response came from Roisin Stone.

Old Belvedere secured a bonus-point win of their own, beating Galwegians 31-15 at Ollie Campbell Park. Elisa McGabhann, Clare Gorman and Alisha Flynn helped the hosts establish a 19-0 lead, although Emily Foley’s hat-trick brought Galwegians back into contention.

Katie Whelan proved decisive for Belvedere, scoring twice, including a stoppage-time try that confirmed the hosts’ maximum-point start.

Newcomers make their mark in Division 1B

Division 1B produced two memorable debut victories, with Enniskillen and MU Barnhall adapting quickly to the demands of the competition.

Enniskillen defeated Tullow 32-12 on home soil after a commanding first-half performance. Stacey Sloan opened the scoring, but Tullow responded through Grace Kelly. Enniskillen then took control as Zara Flack scored twice in four minutes before captain Moya Hill added another try just before half-time.

Amelia McFarland extended the lead in the second half, while Kelly added a second for Tullow. Flack completed her hat-trick in the closing stages, giving Enniskillen an impressive introduction to Division 1B.

MU Barnhall also celebrated a successful first appearance, defeating Ballincollig 17-5 at Parsonstown. Emer Sweetnam and Aoibhín Smith crossed inside the opening quarter to put Barnhall 10-0 ahead.

Niamh O’Mahony’s try brought Ballincollig back to within five points at half-time, and the visitors remained in the contest for much of the second half. However, Ciara Faulkner’s 75th-minute try settled the match, with Abby Healy adding the conversion.

Ennis edge Cooke in a tense finish

Ennis completed the Division 1B fixtures with a narrow 14-10 win over Cooke at Shaw’s Bridge. Cooke made the better start when Molly Boyd scored after 10 minutes, but Ennis responded just before half-time through Takiah Buchanan, converted by Fia Whelan.

Freya Boyce restored Cooke’s lead shortly after the restart. The decisive moment arrived in the 67th minute, when Rhona O’Dea crossed for Ennis. Whelan’s second conversion put the visitors four points clear, and Ennis defended that advantage through the closing stages.
