Irish Rugby: Five Round 2 Battles Set to Shape the All-Ireland League

The Energia All-Ireland League returns this weekend with a full programme of compelling fixtures, and Irish rugby supporters will not have to wait long for the first major test of the new campaign. From a repeat of last season’s Division 1A final to a series of provincial and local rivalries, Round 2 offers early clues about which clubs can turn a strong start into serious momentum.

Irish rugby focus falls on St Mary’s and Clontarf

The standout fixture in Division 1A takes place at Templeville Road, where St Mary’s College host Clontarf in a rematch of last season’s final. St Mary’s began their title defence with a victory over Lansdowne, while Clontarf opened with a win against Old Wesley.

That recent form adds extra edge to a fixture already loaded with history. St Mary’s also defeated Clontarf at the same venue last season, but the visitors will arrive with confidence after their opening-round performance. The game will be available to watch on IrishRugby+, giving supporters the chance to follow one of the weekend’s biggest Irish rugby contests live.

UCD and Lansdowne look to respond

UCD produced one of the most impressive displays of the opening weekend when they defeated Ballynahinch away from home. Their reward is a home meeting with Lansdowne at the UCD Bowl, where they will look to build on that result.

Lansdowne, meanwhile, must recover quickly after losing to St Mary’s. Their recent record in this fixture gives them encouragement, but UCD’s early-season confidence could make this a difficult afternoon.

History returns at Energia Park

Old Wesley host Cork Constitution in their first top-flight fixture since 1997. Both clubs are searching for their first win after opening-day defeats, making this a particularly important early-season opportunity.

Old Belvedere welcome Ballynahinch, while Terenure College entertain Young Munster. Terenure impressed in their win over Cork Constitution, but Young Munster won both meetings between the clubs last season and will believe they can cause another problem.

Division 1B brings another heavyweight meeting

Nenagh Ormond and Naas meet at New Ormond Park with both clubs carrying winning records into Round 2. The recent head-to-head meetings have been tightly contested, so a narrow margin could again decide this Division 1B encounter.

Dublin University host Garryowen at College Park, where Trinity will try to convert last weekend’s draw into a first victory. Instonians and Highfield also meet with both sides seeking their opening success, while MU Barnhall make further history by staging their first Division 1B fixture at Parsonstown against City of Armagh.

UCC are at home to Blackrock College, who started with a win. The Cork students will be aiming to put their opening defeat to Naas behind them and collect their first points of the campaign.

Promotion ambitions tested in Division 2A

Queen’s University and Cashel provide the headline clash in Division 2A. The early top two meet at The Dub after both enjoyed winning starts, with Queen’s defeating Shannon and Cashel overcoming UL Bohemian.

Galwegians return to Crowley Park for their first Division 2A home fixture there in seven years. They face Shannon, with both teams hoping to respond after opening-day defeats. Galway Corinthians travel to Greystones, while Ballymena visit UL Bohemian after their impressive win over Greystones.

Wanderers and Dungannon complete the division’s programme at Merrion Road. Dungannon will chase back-to-back victories, while Wanderers will look to build on the positives from their narrow loss to Corinthians.

Ulster and Munster clubs face important tests

In Division 2B North, Clogher Valley travel to Navan seeking a second consecutive win. Their previous meetings provide a positive reference, but Navan will be determined to make home advantage count.

Skerries travel to Banbridge after an encouraging opening result, while Enniskillen make their first away trip in the league following a bonus-point debut. Malahide stand in their way at Estuary Road. Rainey host Ballyclare in an Ulster derby, and Sligo welcome Malone to Hamilton Park.

Division 2B South also features several intriguing contests. Leaders Bruff host Bective Rangers, Dolphin travel to Clonmel, and Old Crescent welcome Monkstown. Midleton will seek a second straight victory when Buccaneers visit Towns Park, while Enniscorthy and Thomond meet with both sides searching for their first win.
