Sports Ireland has a new standout result to celebrate after the Republic of Ireland women’s team produced an emphatic 8-0 win over Kazakhstan in Astana. Carla Ward’s side now carry a commanding advantage into the second leg of their 2027 World Cup playoff semi-final.
Ireland were in complete control from the opening stages, scoring five times before half-time and adding three more after the interval. The result was made more comfortable when Kazakhstan were reduced to 10 players, but the performance still offered Ward valuable evidence about the strength and depth of her squad.
Sports Ireland: Ireland women seize control of playoff tie
Kyra Carusa opened the scoring with a well-judged header before Chloe Mustaki doubled the lead with her first senior Ireland goal. Emily Murphy, Abbie Larkin and Mustaki were among the players who continued to unsettle the hosts, with Ireland’s movement and pressing creating chances at regular intervals.
The second half followed the same pattern. Jamie Finn marked her return to the starting line-up with a goal, while debutant Shanade Hopcroft scored within two minutes of coming off the bench. Jessie Stapleton also found the net as Ireland completed their biggest win of the tie so far.
The red card shown to the Kazakhstan captain was contentious, and the hosts were already struggling to match Ireland’s pace before the dismissal. Even so, Ward will be pleased by the attacking variety and the contribution of players who have had to wait for regular international opportunities.
Mustaki makes her mark in an unfamiliar role
With Katie McCabe absent, questions surrounded Ireland’s threat on the left. Mustaki answered them decisively after being deployed in a wing-back position she has rarely occupied for the national team.
Her performance combined energy, direct running and creativity. She supplied three assists and scored herself, repeatedly finding space behind the Kazakhstan defence. It was a statement display from a player willing to adapt for the team.
Larkin continues her rapid rise
Abbie Larkin’s development has been one of the clearest stories in recent Irish football. After spending years around international squads without a consistent starting role, she has become increasingly difficult to leave out.
Her movement caused problems throughout the first half. Larkin’s runs helped create room for Carusa and Murphy, while her persistence contributed to the incident that led to the Kazakhstan red card. Her own goal before the break was fitting reward for a tireless performance.
Carusa’s form continues in an Ireland shirt
Carusa carried her strong club form into the international stage with two goals. Her opener was a composed header, while her second came after Ireland had established total control.
Her contribution was not limited to finishing. Carusa frequently dropped deeper, drawing defenders away and opening channels for Larkin and Murphy to attack. That combination gave Ireland a fluid front line and created one of the most effective attacking displays of the Ward era.
Finn’s emotional return and Hopcroft’s dream debut
Jamie Finn made her first Ireland start since December 2023 and immediately looked comfortable in possession. She pressed high, helped Ireland regain the ball and scored the sixth goal with a header.
After a difficult period affected by injuries and limited appearances, the goal carried particular significance. Finn missed out on Ireland’s 2023 World Cup campaign and will hope this return can help put her firmly back in contention for the next tournament.
Hopcroft could hardly have asked for a better introduction. The new arrival, eligible through her Tubbercurry-born grandmother, came off the bench with Ireland already six goals ahead and scored almost immediately. Her composed finish capped a memorable first appearance.
What the result means for Ireland’s World Cup hopes
The eight-goal margin leaves Ireland in an exceptionally strong position ahead of the second leg. Barring a remarkable turnaround, Ward’s team are on course to reach the playoff final and move another step closer to the 2027 World Cup.
The game also strengthened competition for places. Mustaki, Larkin, Carusa, Finn and Hopcroft all provided reasons for optimism, while several established players will know that squad positions are being challenged.

What to watch next
The second leg should give Ward an opportunity to manage the tie while assessing more squad options. The immediate objective is simple: avoid complacency, complete the job and reach the playoff final. For Irish supporters, the bigger picture is even more encouraging—a deepening squad and a growing belief that Ireland can make another major tournament.
