HSE Vaccines: 2026–2027 Winter Flu and COVID-19 Programme Begins

Ireland’s winter vaccination campaign is now under way, with the HSE vaccines programme offering free flu and COVID-19 protection to eligible people. The initiative is designed to reduce serious illness, hospital admissions and deaths during the colder months.

HSE Vaccines Programme Launches Across Ireland

The Health Service Executive (HSE) launched its 2026–2027 Winter Vaccination Programme on 8 October 2026. Eligible people can receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines, including during the same appointment, through participating GPs and pharmacies.

Last winter, Ireland recorded 25,000 confirmed flu cases. Almost 6,000 people were hospitalised, 185 required intensive care and more than 300 deaths occurred among people with confirmed flu. These figures highlight the importance of vaccination for people most at risk of complications.

Who is recommended to get vaccinated?

The HSE recommends both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines for:

  • People aged 60 and older
  • People with certain underlying medical conditions
  • People with weakened immune systems

Flu vaccination is also recommended for healthcare workers, pregnant women and children aged two to 17. Children in this age group can receive the free nasal flu vaccine through participating GPs and pharmacies, while some may be offered vaccination through school-based programmes.

How to Access HSE Vaccines

Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are free for eligible people. Vaccination is available at participating GP practices and pharmacies. HSE vaccination teams will also visit nursing homes, residential care facilities and people who are housebound.

Dedicated flu vaccination clinics will be available for healthcare workers. People should contact a participating GP or pharmacist to discuss eligibility, availability and appointment arrangements.

Why Winter Vaccination Matters

Flu and COVID-19 can lead to serious illness, particularly among older adults and people living with health conditions. Vaccination helps strengthen protection before seasonal viruses circulate more widely and can reduce pressure on hospitals and frontline services.

Dr Louise Marron, Consultant in Public Health Medicine at the National Immunisation Office, encouraged eligible people to receive both vaccines for the strongest available protection this winter. The programme is part of the wider public health response coordinated through the HSE and Ireland’s national health system.

Key Takeaway for Eligible Residents

People who qualify should arrange their vaccination with a participating GP or pharmacist rather than waiting until winter illnesses become widespread. The HSE vaccines programme provides free flu and COVID-19 protection and remains an important step in safeguarding individuals, families and health services.
