Three Letterkenny University Hospital nurses have been recognised for exceptional clinical care, compassion and support for patients and families. The HSE award ceremony celebrated Katherine Kilpatrick, Shelagh McDevitt and Claire McConnell after they were selected from more than 60 nominations.
The presentation took place at Letterkenny University Hospital on Friday, marking the hospital’s third DAISY Award ceremony of 2026. The international programme recognises nurses and midwives whose professionalism and kindness make a meaningful difference during difficult healthcare experiences.
HSE nurses recognised for compassionate patient care
Each recipient was nominated by patients, relatives or colleagues. Their nominations highlighted the emotional support, reassurance and practical assistance they provided across different areas of the hospital.
- Katherine Kilpatrick, Staff Nurse on Medical 3, was recognised for supporting a patient facing a life-changing illness and an extended hospital stay. Her compassion and dedication helped provide comfort during an especially challenging period.
- Shelagh McDevitt, Staff Nurse in the Paediatric Day Ward, was honoured for her care of a young patient undergoing cancer treatment. Her patience, warmth and reassurance helped make regular hospital visits more positive for the child and family.
- Claire McConnell, Staff Nurse in Gynaecology, received the award for supporting a patient experiencing pregnancy loss. Her empathetic care continued after the initial admission through follow-up reassurance in the weeks that followed.
DAISY Award ceremony continues at LUH
Letterkenny University Hospital works with The DAISY Foundation, an international organisation established in the United States by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. The programme honours nurses and midwives who consistently demonstrate outstanding clinical skill and compassionate care.
LUH holds four DAISY ceremonies each year. Every nominee receives a certificate and pin, while three honourees are selected quarterly. Award recipients receive a hand-carved “Healer’s Touch” sculpture, an honouree pin, a certificate and cinnamon buns to share with colleagues.

Recognition for nurses and midwives across the HSE
Una Cardin, Director of Nursing at LUH, said the awards provide an important opportunity to highlight the exceptional care delivered throughout the hospital. She praised the recipients for their kindness, professionalism and commitment to patients.
Marion Doogan, Director of Midwifery at LUH, also congratulated all nominees and said the awards reflect the lasting impact nurses and midwives have on patients and families.
The ceremony demonstrates how patient feedback can recognise healthcare workers whose contribution extends beyond medical treatment. Compassion, communication and continuity of care remain central to the patient experience across the Health Service Executive.
