A major boost for HSE neonatal services in the Mid West will see Dr Rachel Mullaly join University Maternity Hospital Limerick (UMHL) as a Consultant Neonatologist. The appointment strengthens specialist care for newborn babies and their families across Limerick and the wider region.
Following the appointment, the number of consultant neonatologists serving the Mid West rises to seven. Dr Mullaly will join UMHL’s established neonatology team, contributing expertise in neonatal haemodynamics—the assessment and management of blood flow and cardiac function in newborn babies.
HSE neonatal services strengthened in the Mid West
Dr Mullaly has presented her work in neonatal haemodynamics at national and international meetings. Her specialist knowledge is expected to complement the existing clinical expertise at UMHL and support the hospital’s ongoing delivery of highly specialised neonatal medicine.
Neonatal care relies on close collaboration between doctors, nurses, midwives, paediatric teams and families. The new consultant post is therefore significant not only for clinical capacity, but also for family-centred care and coordinated maternity and paediatric services within the Health Service Executive (HSE).
Specialist qualifications and international training
Dr Mullaly holds an MSc in Neonatology from the University of Southampton and a PhD in Neonatal Haemodynamics from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She recently returned to Ireland after completing a year of advanced fellowship training at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital and Royal Women’s Hospital.
She said she was delighted to join the UMHL neonatal team and looked forward to contributing to care for babies and families throughout the Mid West. She also highlighted the importance of clinical expertise, teamwork and compassionate care in neonatal medicine.
Investment in Limerick’s neonatal intensive care environment
The appointment follows substantial investment in the hospital’s neonatal facilities. A two-storey extension and refurbishment project costing €9.7 million was completed at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in 2025.
The project created an improved environment for newborn babies, parents and staff, supporting the delivery of modern neonatal intensive care alongside the hospital’s specialist workforce.
