Winter flu can quickly turn into a serious health threat, particularly for older people, pregnant women, children and those living with underlying conditions. The Health Service Executive (HSE) South West is urging eligible people across Cork and Kerry to arrange their free flu and Covid-19 vaccines ahead of the 2026 winter season.
The appeal comes after a severe previous winter in Ireland, when 25,000 confirmed flu cases were reported. Almost 6,000 people were hospitalised, 185 patients required intensive care and more than 300 deaths occurred among people with confirmed flu.

Dr Anne Sheahan, HSE South West Regional Director for Public Health, said vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious illness, hospital admission and complications from seasonal infections.
According to the HSE, vaccination can reduce the likelihood of infection by approximately 40% to 60%. People who become infected after vaccination are also less likely to develop severe illness or require hospital treatment.
Flu and Covid-19 vaccines can be administered during the same appointment, helping eligible people prepare for the colder months while reducing pressure on hospitals and frontline services.
Who is eligible for vaccination?
The HSE recommends both flu and Covid-19 vaccination for:
- People aged 60 and over
- People with certain underlying medical conditions
- People with weakened immune systems
The flu vaccine is also recommended for healthcare workers, pregnant women and children aged between two and 17.
Where to get free flu and Covid vaccines
Eligible people can receive vaccines free of charge through participating GPs and pharmacies. HSE vaccination teams will also support residents in nursing homes and other residential care settings, as well as people who are housebound.
Dedicated flu vaccination clinics are available for healthcare workers. Children aged two to 17 may receive the free nasal flu vaccine through participating GPs and pharmacies, while some children will be offered vaccination through school-based programmes.

How vaccination helps protect communities
Vaccination offers personal protection while also helping reduce transmission to vulnerable family members, patients and colleagues. This is particularly important for healthcare workers and people caring for older adults or individuals with complex medical needs.
People seeking advice about eligibility, timing or possible concerns should speak with a participating GP or pharmacist. Further official information is available through hse.ie and the HSE seasonal influenza service.
