Energia All-Ireland League Round 5: Unbeaten Records Face Major Tests

Unbeaten sides face major tests as the Energia All-Ireland League returns for a packed Round 5 of Irish club rugby.

Round five of the Energia All-Ireland League brings a packed weekend of Irish club rugby, with unbeaten teams facing their toughest examinations yet and several provincial rivalries adding extra edge. From Old Belvedere’s visit to Cork Constitution to the meeting of Clonmel and Old Crescent, the latest sports Ireland action is full of promotion pressure, redemption opportunities and early-season momentum.

Old Belvedere face long wait for Cork win

Division 1A leaders Old Belvedere travel to Temple Hill after an impressive victory over Clontarf. The Dublin club will be confident, but Cork Constitution provide a difficult challenge, particularly at home. Belvo have not won at the venue since March 2014, while Cork Con need a response after losing to UCD.

Second-placed Terenure College are also chasing continued momentum when UCD visit Lakelands. Terenure have already claimed two Dublin derby victories and are aiming for a third in succession. UCD arrive with confidence after beating Cork Constitution, although their last win at Lakelands came in February 2020.

Clontarf will look to recover at Castle Avenue against Ballynahinch. The hosts suffered a narrow defeat to Old Belvedere last weekend, while Ballynahinch secured their first victory of the campaign against Lansdowne. The Ulster side have yet to win at the venue, but their recent result gives this contest added intrigue.

Elsewhere, Old Wesley host defending champions St Mary’s College, with Wesley pursuing a third consecutive home victory. Young Munster and Lansdowne meet at Tom Clifford Park, with both sides seeking a return to winning form.

Highfield and Trinity set the pace in Division 1B

Highfield begin the weekend’s Division 1B programme on Friday night when UCC visit Woodleigh Park. The leaders are chasing a fourth straight win, while UCC remain without a victory after four rounds of irish sports competition.

Dublin University travel north to face Instonians in a repeat of last season’s promotion play-off semi-final. Trinity won that meeting, but Instonians arrive with two successive victories and will be determined to reverse the outcome this time.

Blackrock College visit Garryowen, where they are seeking their first win since 2011. Naas and City of Armagh are separated by only two points, making their meeting at Forenaughts particularly important. Nenagh Ormond, meanwhile, host MU Barnhall as they try to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

Promotion battles dominate Division 2A

Ballymena have made the perfect start in Division 2A, collecting 18 points from a possible 20. They welcome Wanderers, who have won their last two games and will provide a serious test despite the Ulster club’s excellent form.

Another key fixture takes place at Spafield, where unbeaten Dungannon face Cashel. Dungannon remain among the division’s leading contenders, while Cashel will want an immediate reaction after suffering their first defeat. The teams drew 25-25 at the same venue last November, suggesting another close contest could be in store.

Galway Corinthians host Shannon, Queen’s University travel to UL Bohemian and Greystones welcome Galwegians. For Queen’s and Galwegians, the priority is halting difficult runs, while Corinthians and Greystones are aiming to strengthen their positions.

Unbeaten clashes headline both Division 2B sections

Division 2B North features a heavyweight Ulster derby as Clogher Valley travel to Malone. Both teams have won all four of their matches, with only points difference separating them. Malone won the last meeting at Gibson Park, but Clogher Valley’s current form makes this one of the weekend’s standout GAA and rugby Ireland fixtures—though unlike Gaelic games, this contest will be decided under the rugby code.

Ballyclare host Banbridge after contrasting results last weekend, while Enniskillen welcome Skerries. Sligo face Navan at Hamilton Park, and Rainey continue their search for a first win when Malahide visit Hatrick Park.

In Division 2B South, Clonmel and Old Crescent meet with perfect records and four bonus-point wins apiece. Just three points of score difference separate the sides, creating a genuine early-season title test at Ard Gaoithe. Clonmel won 38-8 in the Munster Senior Plate final in March, but this league encounter represents a fresh challenge.

Bective Rangers visit Thomond in search of a fourth straight victory. Dolphin and Midleton contest an all-Cork derby at Virgin Media Park, while Bruff travel to Enniscorthy. Monkstown and Buccaneers will both be hoping to recover from heavy defeats.
