Round five of the Energia All-Ireland League delivered another busy weekend of Irish club rugby, with bonus points, late drama and eye-catching attacking displays across the divisions. Old Belvedere and Terenure College remain the teams to catch in Division 1A, while Clontarf responded strongly to their previous defeat.

The latest sports ireland action also saw Blackrock College rise to the top of Division 1B, Cashel snatch a remarkable Division 2A win, and Clonmel continue their unbeaten run in Division 2B South.

Clontarf bounce back as Belvedere stay unbeaten

Clontarf produced one of the performances of the round at Castle Avenue, defeating Ballynahinch 39-21 and collecting a bonus point. Hooker Dylan Donnellan was central to the result, scoring three tries in an outstanding display.

Clontarf led 7-0 early on before Ballynahinch captain Claytan Milligan restored parity. The contest remained level at half-time, but the hosts took control after the interval. Paul Deeny, Pierce Crowe, Aaron Sexton and Oisin McCormack all featured on the scoresheet, while Conor Kelly added 14 points from the tee.

Old Belvedere maintained their strong start with a 24-7 away victory over Cork Constitution at Temple Hill. After Evan Clarke had given Cork Con an early lead, Jayden Beckett levelled the game before Belvedere pulled clear in the second half. Calum Dowling scored twice and George Hadden completed the bonus-point try late on.

Terenure College recorded the highest Division 1A score, beating UCD 47-25 at Lakelands Park. The home side scored seven tries, including two from Aran Egan, while UCD’s response included a brace from Bernard White.

Division 1A produces more attacking rugby

St Mary’s College also secured a bonus-point win, overcoming Old Wesley 26-17 at Energia Park. Replacement Richie Fahy made a major impact with two second-half tries, with Ruairi Shields adding another as Mary’s finished strongly.

Lansdowne came from behind to defeat Young Munster 36-26 at Tom Clifford Park. Young Munster led 19-17 at the interval and extended that advantage after the restart, but Lansdowne turned the game around through tries from Daniel Hurley, Hugo McLaughlin and Tom Roche.

Blackrock College move top in Division 1B

Blackrock College took over at the summit after a commanding 43-16 victory over Garryowen. Seven different Blackrock players crossed the line, underlining the depth of their attacking performance.

Naas remain close behind after their 43-17 bonus-point success against City of Armagh. Cillian Redmond scored twice inside the opening 21 minutes, while Daniel Ticklepenny contributed 13 points with the boot.

Instonians continued their impressive form by edging Dublin University 28-22. Trinity led at half-time, but Bevan Prinsloo’s late try settled a tight contest. Nenagh Ormond also secured a dramatic win, with replacement Conor McMahon landing a stoppage-time penalty to beat MU Barnhall 18-16.

The scheduled Highfield-UCC fixture was abandoned after a floodlight failure at Woodleigh Park.

Cashel snatch dramatic Division 2A victory

Cashel moved to the top of Division 2A after a thrilling 21-20 win over Dungannon. The visitors appeared to have done enough when Peter Nelson kicked a second-half penalty, but Ben Twomey struck a drop goal five minutes into stoppage time to complete a remarkable finish.

Wanderers defeated Ballymena 24-17, with Sean Sexton scoring a hat-trick. Corinthians continued their good form with a 24-3 win over Shannon, while Galwegians claimed their first victory of the season by beating Greystones 22-15 through a stoppage-time try from Duinn Maguire.
