Energia All-Ireland League Round 2: Rivalries, Rematches and Early Pressure

Round two of the Energia All-Ireland League brings a full weekend of Irish rugby fixtures, with defending champions St Mary’s College facing last season’s final opponents Clontarf among the standout ties. Across the divisions, clubs are chasing early momentum, first wins and valuable points in a programme packed with local derbies and intriguing rematches.

Sports Ireland focus: St Mary’s and Clontarf renew rivalry

The biggest fixture in Division 1A takes place at Templeville Road, where St Mary’s College welcome Clontarf in a repeat of last season’s decider. Mary’s began their title defence by defeating Lansdowne, while Clontarf opened with a win over Old Wesley.

Recent meetings suggest another close contest. St Mary’s won the equivalent fixture 32-21 last season, but Clontarf will arrive with confidence after their positive start. The match will be available to watch on IrishRugby+.

There is another Dublin contest at the UCD Bowl, where UCD host Lansdowne. UCD produced one of the opening round’s strongest displays with a convincing away win over Ballynahinch. Lansdowne, meanwhile, will be determined to recover from their defeat to St Mary’s.

Old Wesley’s return to top-flight rugby at Energia Park is another major talking point. Their first Division 1A home fixture since 1997 comes against Cork Constitution, with both teams searching for their first victory. Old Belvedere, the early leaders, host Ballynahinch, while Terenure College entertain Young Munster at Lakelands Park.

Ireland sports news: promotion contenders meet in Division 1B

Division 1B also features an early meeting between two unbeaten sides. Nenagh Ormond host leaders Naas at New Ormond Park after both clubs made winning starts. Their recent meetings have been tightly contested, adding further interest to a fixture with possible promotion implications later in the campaign.

Dublin University welcome Garryowen to College Park, with Trinity looking to turn last weekend’s draw with City of Armagh into a first win. Instonians and Highfield meet at Shaw’s Bridge, where previous clashes have produced narrow margins and high scores.

MU Barnhall make history by hosting their first Division 1B match at Parsonstown. City of Armagh provide the opposition, while UCC face Blackrock College at the Mardyke. Blackrock opened with victory and will hope to maintain that momentum against a UCC side still seeking its first points.

Division 2A: Queen’s and Cashel lead the way

The early top two collide at The Dub as Queen’s University host Cashel. Queen’s impressed in their opening win over Shannon, while Cashel defeated newly promoted UL Bohemian. The meeting offers an early test of both sides’ promotion ambitions.

Galwegians return to Crowley Park for the first Division 2A fixture at the venue in seven years. Shannon are the visitors, with both clubs looking to respond after opening-round defeats. Galway Corinthians travel to Greystones following a narrow win over Wanderers, while Greystones will aim to bounce back from their loss to Ballymena.

Elsewhere, Ballymena visit UL Bohemian and Wanderers host Dungannon at Merrion Road. Dungannon are seeking successive wins after their strong opening result.

Ulster and Munster clubs face important tests

In Division 2B North, Clogher Valley travel to Navan looking to make it two wins from two. Skerries also began brightly and face Banbridge at Rifle Park, while Enniskillen make their first away trip in the competition against Malahide after a memorable bonus-point debut.

Rainey host Ballyclare in an Ulster derby, with Ballyclare hoping to follow their opening victory over Sligo. Sligo return home to face Malone, who defeated Banbridge last weekend.

Bruff will play their first home fixture in Division 2B South when Bective Rangers visit Kilballyowen Park. Dolphin travel to Clonmel in a particularly interesting Munster contest, while Old Crescent host Monkstown. Midleton entertain Buccaneers and Enniscorthy meet Thomond at Alcast Park, with both teams seeking their first win.

What to watch next

The second round should provide an early indication of which clubs can sustain their opening-weekend form and which teams are ready to respond under pressure. The St Mary’s-Clontarf rematch is the headline attraction, but the promotion race in Division 1B and the early battle at the top of Division 2A could prove just as significant.
