Dublin Digest: Stillorgan Library Opens as New Community Hub

A new chapter has begun for local learning and community life as Stillorgan Library officially opens in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. The modern facility replaces the former 1970s prefabricated building and creates a larger, more flexible space for reading, study, technology and cultural events.

The opening, held on 30 September 2026, was attended by Cllr Barry Saul, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council; Minister of State Jerry Buttimer; council chief executive Frank Curran; County Librarian Catherine Gallagher; local representatives and pupils from Oatlands Primary School.

Stillorgan Library expands learning and community services

Located at St Laurence’s Park, the two-storey library measures more than 1,000 square metres—approximately twice the size of the previous branch. It has been designed as a welcoming civic space for residents of Stillorgan, Mount Merrion, Kilmacud, Leopardstown and nearby communities.

Facilities include:

  • Flexible study and learning areas
  • Meeting rooms for community use
  • Public computers and digital technology services
  • Exhibition and cultural spaces
  • An outdoor courtyard
  • Improved accessibility throughout the building

The branch has historically welcomed more than 100,000 visits each year. Services moved temporarily to Stillorgan Village Shopping Centre after the former library closed in October 2021 while construction progressed.

My Open Library plans to extend access

Stillorgan Library is also planned to become a My Open Library location. Once introduced, the service is expected to increase access from 51 hours to 98 hours weekly, giving members greater flexibility to use the facility outside traditionally staffed periods.

The project received €2.5 million through successive Department of Rural and Community Development library capital programmes. It forms part of the wider regeneration of St Laurence’s Park, which includes 88 social and affordable homes, public-realm improvements and better connections to public transport and active travel routes.
