Businesses across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown are being reminded to renew their street furniture licences before the deadline of 31 October 2026. The notice is important for cafés, restaurants and other operators using outdoor tables, chairs or structures on public footpaths and licensed public spaces.
The annual renewal charge for licensed outdoor tables is €125 per table. Businesses must ensure the fee is paid on time to keep their permission valid and continue using public areas in line with the council’s requirements.
Dublin business owners face 31 October renewal deadline
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council says the renewal process applies to holders of Street Furniture Licences. These licences control how commercial equipment and structures are placed on public roads and in other public areas.
Street furniture covered by the licensing system can include:
- Outdoor tables and chairs
- Advertising structures
- Kiosks and awnings
- Telecommunications infrastructure
- Other appliances or structures located in the public realm
The framework is designed to support local commerce while protecting pedestrian access, public safety and the orderly management of streets and footpaths. For businesses, renewing on time is an essential compliance step rather than simply an administrative formality.
What happens if a licence is not renewed?
The council warns that a licence may lapse if the renewal fee is not paid by 31 October 2026. Businesses could then face enforcement action under planning legislation.
Street furniture placed without valid permission may also be removed from a public footpath under Section 70 of the Roads Act 1993, as amended. Operators should therefore review their licence conditions and confirm that payment has been completed before the deadline.
The licences are issued under Section 254 of the Planning and Development Act, which provides for certain appliances, apparatus and structures on public roads and public places.
