The HSE is urging eligible women in Gorey to attend their BreastCheck appointments during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The free breast screening service is inviting women aged 50 to 69 for mammograms at its mobile unit in Gorey, helping bring essential healthcare closer to local communities.
Women who cannot attend their scheduled appointment are encouraged to contact BreastCheck rather than simply miss it. The service can arrange another date, time or location, while cancelled appointments can then be offered to other women waiting for screening.
BreastCheck Gorey appointments support earlier detection
BreastCheck operates 24 mobile screening units across Ireland. The Gorey unit is located at Gorey Health Centre, Gorey District Hospital, Y25 N5K6, and will remain in the area until eligible women registered locally have been invited.
Screening can help identify breast cancer at an earlier stage, when treatment may be more effective. The HSE also highlights that women who attend their first mammogram are more likely to attend future invitations and less likely to receive a later diagnosis at a more advanced stage.
However, many appointments are missed. Almost 40% of women do not attend their first offered screening appointment, while 30% do not attend a second invitation. Contacting BreastCheck to rearrange or cancel helps the programme screen more women sooner.
Support available for women attending screening
BreastCheck aims to make appointments accessible and straightforward. Support may include:
- An alternative appointment date or time
- Screening at another BreastCheck location
- Accessible facilities and resources for additional needs
- Clear information about the screening process
Women can use the contact details on their invitation letter, call 1800 45 45 55 or email info@breastcheck.ie. Women who have not previously attended can register online through hse.ie/breastcheck and add their details from age 48.

Symptoms should be discussed with a GP
BreastCheck is intended for women without breast cancer symptoms. Anyone who notices a new lump, thickened tissue, breast shape or size changes, bloodstained nipple discharge, armpit swelling, skin dimpling, a nipple rash or a newly inverted nipple should contact their GP for advice instead of waiting for routine screening.
The HSE Health App can display BreastCheck appointment details, provide reminders and explain how to prepare. The service is part of the wider work of the Health Service Executive (HSE) to improve access to preventive care across Ireland.
