Women aged 50 to 69 in Gorey are being encouraged to attend their free BreastCheck appointment during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The HSE says women who cannot attend should contact the service promptly so their appointment can be rearranged and offered to someone else in the community.
The BreastCheck mobile unit is currently located at Gorey Health Centre at Gorey District Hospital, where it will remain until eligible women registered in the area have been invited. The service is part of the HSE’s national breast screening programme, which uses 24 mobile units to bring screening closer to communities across Ireland.
BreastCheck Gorey appointments support earlier detection
BreastCheck is a free screening service for women aged 50 to 69 who do not have symptoms of breast cancer. HSE information indicates that breast cancer detected through screening is more likely to be found at an earlier stage, when treatment can be more effective.
The HSE is asking women to treat each invitation as an important opportunity to look after their health. It also says attending a first mammogram can make women more likely to attend future screening invitations.
Almost 40% of women do not attend their first screening appointment, while 30% do not attend when offered a second appointment. Contacting BreastCheck can help reduce delays and allow the service to screen more women efficiently.
What to do if you cannot attend
BreastCheck may be able to provide:
- A different appointment date or time
- An appointment at another screening location
- Accessible facilities and resources for additional needs
- Clear information about the screening process
Women can use the contact details on their invitation letter, call 1800 45 45 55, or email info@breastcheck.ie. If screening is declined, women are also asked to let BreastCheck know so the appointment can be reassigned.

How women can register for BreastCheck
Women who have never attended breast screening can register online through the HSE BreastCheck service and update their contact details. Registration is available from age 48. Keeping an address and phone number current helps ensure invitations and reminders are received.
Women who use the HSE Health App may also receive digital invitations and reminders. The app can show appointment information, provide preparation guidance and make appointment management easier.
Symptoms should be discussed with a GP
BreastCheck is intended for women without symptoms. Anyone who notices a new lump, breast thickening, a change in breast size or shape, bloodstained nipple discharge, armpit swelling, skin dimpling, a nipple rash or a newly inverted nipple should contact their GP rather than attend routine screening for that concern.
