Studio Ghibli’s enchanting classic is perfect for viewers seeking a gentle escape. Rural landscapes, magical creatures and a soothing soundtrack give the film the comforting quality of a cup of tea on a rainy afternoon.

Book-loving Matilda, autumn school days and a strong nostalgic atmosphere make this a natural seasonal favourite. It is a particularly good pick for families or anyone looking for a cheerful comfort watch.

Spooky films for Halloween season
Frankenstein
Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale brings together sorrow, fear, love and loss. Its cold atmosphere and tragic story make it a natural choice as autumn nights draw in.
Knives Out
This stylish murder mystery offers a lighter form of seasonal suspense. The sprawling house, family secrets and memorable knitwear create an inviting autumn aesthetic for viewers who prefer mystery to outright horror.
Coraline
With misty visuals, stop-motion animation and a deeply unsettling parallel world, Coraline is an excellent gateway into Halloween viewing. It balances dark fantasy with a distinctive, imaginative style.
Sleepy Hollow
Ichabod Crane’s investigation into a series of brutal murders unfolds in a foggy, gothic village. The film’s atmosphere is packed with bare trees, shadows and mystery, making it one of the strongest spooky autumn recommendations.

This cult favourite follows two sisters whose magical abilities become central to overcoming life’s challenges. Its witchcraft, family bond and playful tone make it ideal for a relaxed Halloween film night.
Get Out
Jordan Peele’s tense thriller uses a seemingly ordinary suburban setting to build mounting unease. The wooded surroundings and psychological tension make it a compelling choice for viewers wanting something genuinely disturbing.
Pan’s Labyrinth
This dark fairytale combines fantasy, historical drama and eerie imagery. Its mysterious underworld and haunting visual design offer a more challenging but unforgettable option for a spooky-season watchlist.
The Banshees of Inisherin
Set on a fictional island off Ireland’s coast, this introspective drama is filled with rugged scenery, open countryside and emotional unease. Its windswept setting gives it a uniquely Irish autumn atmosphere.
