Standfirst: A large European study has found that children and teenagers are falling behind on strength, flexibility and healthy body composition. The study, led by researchers at the University of Zaragoza and published in Sports Medicine – Open, analysed data from 417,362 participants aged 6 to 16 collected between 1965 and 2023. It found a broad decline in health-related physical fitness, especially in muscular strength, flexibility and body composition.

According to the findings, upper-body strength has generally fallen since the 1970s, despite a period of relative stability between the 1980s and 2000. Lower-body strength improved until the 1980s but has declined steadily since then.
The sharpest deterioration was seen in flexibility, with the decline accelerating after 2000. Researchers also found worsening body composition, including rising body fat levels, warning that body mass index alone may underestimate the scale of the problem.
Cardiorespiratory fitness showed a long-term decline as well, although the most recent data suggest that trend may have levelled off somewhat between 2015 and 2023. Even so, levels remain below those recorded in earlier decades.
