Crossmaglen Rangers produced one of the most dramatic moments in this year’s county championship as the O’Neill brothers inspired an extraordinary recovery against Clann Éireann. Trailing by 13 points at half-time, Crossmaglen turned the game around to win 0-23 to 1-19 and book their place in the Armagh senior football final.
The result will rank among the most remarkable stories in recent sports Ireland coverage. Oisín, Rian and Aaron O’Neill combined for 0-17, with their long-range shooting proving decisive in a semi-final that appeared to be firmly in Clann Éireann’s control after a dominant first half.
Crossmaglen face impossible task at half-time
Clann Éireann made full use of the conditions in the opening period, building a commanding 1-14 to 0-4 lead. Five two-point scores and an Emmet Magee goal left Crossmaglen with a mountain to climb at the interval.
For long spells, Clann Éireann controlled the contest through sharp attacking play and effective use of possession. Crossmaglen, meanwhile, struggled to turn their opportunities into scores and looked destined to exit the Armagh championship at the semi-final stage.
Yet the introduction of the two-point score into the game created the possibility of a rapid swing. Crossmaglen took that opportunity with remarkable confidence after the restart.
O’Neill brothers lead extraordinary second-half surge
Aaron O’Neill began the revival with a long-range two-pointer before Pearse Blessing and Oisín O’Neill added further scores. Rian then contributed a ’45 and another two-pointer as Crossmaglen began to chip away at the deficit.
The comeback gathered unstoppable momentum as Crossmaglen scored 12 points without reply. Their accuracy from distance transformed the match, cutting Clann Éireann’s advantage to just one point and completely changing the atmosphere inside the Athletic Grounds.
Crossmaglen eventually landed eight two-pointers in the second half, with seven of them coming from the O’Neill brothers. Their ability to shoot under pressure from outside the scoring zone was the defining feature of the game.
Rian’s red card adds further drama
The momentum appeared to swing back towards Clann Éireann when Rian O’Neill was shown a straight red card for a high tackle late in the second half. Losing one of their key attacking players threatened to derail Crossmaglen’s recovery.
Instead, the south Armagh side responded with greater resilience. Aaron struck another two-pointer before Oisín assumed responsibility for the closing stages. His injury-time two-point free completed the turnaround and secured a one-point victory.
Oisín finished with 0-10, Aaron added 0-4 and Rian scored 0-3. Together, the brothers accounted for 17 of Crossmaglen’s 23 points in an outstanding display of finishing.
Armagh final now awaits Crossmaglen
Crossmaglen will meet Killeavy in the county final. Stevie McDonnell’s side reached the decider after defeating Dromintee 2-12 to 0-8 in the other semi-final.
The final will offer Crossmaglen the chance to complete a memorable championship campaign, but Rian O’Neill’s disciplinary situation could become an important talking point in the build-up. His availability will be closely monitored after the sending-off.
For Killeavy, the challenge will be to limit Crossmaglen’s space and prevent the O’Neill brothers from finding range. After this semi-final, no lead against Crossmaglen can be considered safe.

What happens next?
Crossmaglen now turn their attention to the Armagh county final against Killeavy. The key question is whether their long-range scoring can be repeated on the biggest day of the county season—and whether Rian O’Neill will be available to join his brothers in the attempt.
