Apply to School Ireland is changing how families apply for first-year places at participating post-primary schools. The Department of Education and Youth has published guidance for parents and guardians taking part in the pilot for the 2027–2028 school year.
The online system is available from midnight on 1 October 2026, while the deadline for on-time applications is 22 October 2026. Here is what families need to know before submitting an application.
Apply to School Ireland: Key dates for parents
The pilot allows parents and guardians in certain areas to apply online for first-year places at participating secondary schools. Applications are managed through the Apply to School Hub, where families can monitor progress and respond to offers.
- Applications open: Midnight, 1 October 2026
- On-time application deadline: 22 October 2026
- Initial offers issued: 12 November 2026
- Offer acceptance deadline: 20 November 2026
Applications submitted after 22 October will be treated as late applications and considered under the relevant school’s published admissions policy, subject to available places.
How to apply through the online school admissions system
Parents must create an account using a valid email address, username, password and security question. The same account can be used to apply for more than one child.
Applicants should review the admissions policy of every school before applying. Schools set their own admission criteria, and the questions or supporting documents required may differ.
Documents that may be required
- The student’s birth certificate
- Two proofs of address
- Relevant documents supporting an application for a special class place
Documents can be uploaded from a phone, tablet or computer. Special-class documentation must be uploaded separately for each school so that sensitive information is shared only with the intended school.
Special classes, multiple schools and waiting lists
Where a participating school has a special class, parents can apply for a special-class place, a mainstream place, or both. The Department of Education and Youth says the admission of children with special educational needs should remain integrated within mainstream admissions.
Families can apply to more than one school, and the department strongly recommends doing so because demand may exceed capacity. The system does not allow parents to rank schools by preference.
Where a child is eligible but does not receive an offer, the school will place them on a waiting list in accordance with its admissions policy. A waiting-list number can be viewed in the Parent Hub, although it is a reference number and may not represent the child’s exact position.

Offers, changes and application support
Initial offers will appear in the Apply to School Parents Hub on 12 November 2026. Parents will receive an email notification, then must log in to accept or decline an offer and complete any required registration information.
The department encourages families to accept only one school place. An acceptance is not confirmed until all requested supporting information has been submitted.
Applications can be edited or withdrawn through the Parent Hub until 22 October. After that date, parents should contact the relevant school directly if they need to correct information.
Families without internet access or an email address, or anyone needing help with an application, should contact the school they wish to apply to. Technical problems can be reported to helpdesk_applytoschool@education.gov.ie. Admissions questions should be directed to the school.
