A Dublin comic on family, staying put and backing himself

“I didn’t really come out of the closet. My parents went in to get me.” It’s the kind of line only Gearóid Farrelly could deliver with a laugh and a lump in the throat. Speaking about growing up between Glasnevin and Finglas, the Dublin comedian painted a picture of a loud kitchen table, four sisters, a watchful mam, and a family that left little room for secrets.

A comic voice shaped at home

In the latest interview with Gearóid Farrelly, the most memorable detail is not just the joke, but the warmth behind it. He recalls being badly bullied at school and taking time to accept he was gay, even while his parents had already seen the truth with clarity and care. His mother, he said, was direct: if he was gay, that was fine, and he should get on with living his life.

That honesty stayed with him. Gearóid Farrelly said it made a real difference, and likely spared him years of hiding from the people closest to him. Later, when he began performing, he believed he was the only gay comedian on the Irish circuit. That experience still shapes how he thinks about younger audiences, especially teenagers trying to make sense of themselves.

He also spoke plainly about building a career at home. For years, he balanced stand-up with a developer job in Aviva’s IT department before taking the leap into comedy full-time in 2015. Plenty advised him to move to England. He refused.

  • He wanted to stay close to family.
  • He believed Irish audiences were enough to build a career.
  • He saw new routes opening through podcasts, Instagram and direct fan support.

That mix of stubbornness and faith runs through Gearóid Farrelly’s story. He stayed in Ireland, made it work, and kept his voice intact. With his new show No Pressure beginning in Greystones before a wider tour, Gearóid Farrelly sounds exactly where he wants to be: at home, on stage, and still speaking to the people who need to hear it.
